NCAA Midwest: Texas vs Colgate Prediction, Game Preview, Live Stream, Odds and Picks

Texas Looks To Brush Off Colgate

The top story of the 2022 NCAA Tournament was No. 15 Saint Peter’s taking down No. 2 Kentucky in the first round and advancing to the Elite Eight. A 15 seed has won in two consecutive tournaments. Will the trend continue?

The 2023 field features a good group of 15 seeds, led by Vermont and Colgate. In the Midwest Region, No. 2 Texas (26-8) will clash with No. 15 Colgate (26-8) in Des Moines. Per college basketball lines, this matchup has the second-lowest spread among the No. 2 vs. 15 matchups at 13½ points.

Texas has emerged as a title contender with five straight covers against the spread (ATS). Colgate is also hot, covering four consecutive games. Which team will be extinguished on Thursday?

Texas Targeting National Title

Despite forward Timmy Allen (10.5 points) missing the Big 12 Tournament with a leg injury, the Longhorns rolled. They won three games by an average margin of 13.3 points. Texas was a sneaky championship pick for most of the season. After drumming Kansas 76-56 in the Big 12 Tournament title, the Longhorns are no longer flying under the radar.

NCAA basketball odds have Texas tied with UCLA, Arizona, and Gonzaga with the fourth-lowest odds to cut the nets (+1600). It will be difficult to not favor the Longhorns when betting online. Nearly everything is headed in the right direction.

First off, the backcourt play is fantastic. Marcus Carr (15.9 points) and Sir’Jabari Rice (12.6 points) continue to share the spotlight with high-scoring games. Tyrese Hunter (10.2 points) has shown some promise after recording double-digit points in three straight games from Mar. 1 to Mar. 9. Furthermore, forward Dylan Disu (8.3 points and 4.2 rebounds) has emerged as a difference maker, averaging 14.7 points, and 8.3 rebounds in the last three.

The offense will only improve when Allen returns from injury. He is questionable for Thursday’s game.

Colgate Makes Third Straight Tournament

In the last two tournaments, the Raiders were popular sports bets. They were a 14 seed in both appearances and were only 8½-point underdogs in 2021 against Arkansas and seven-point dogs against Wisconsin last year. Arkansas pulled away late in 2021 with a 17-point win, but Colgate nearly pulled off the upset against Wisconsin with a seven-point loss. Texas is the Raiders’ toughest matchup, making it a risky online gambling option.

Per usual, Colgate has firepower, ranking 44th in offensive efficiency. It ranks second in shooting percentage and its 40.9% mark on 3-pointers leads the nation. During the Raiders’ nine-game winning streak, they have reached 80 points in five games and 90 points in four games. Texas will be a challenge, ranking 11th in defensive efficiency. The Longhorns have allowed 55.5 points per game in the last four.

Stopping Texas’ excellent backcourt will be Colgate’s biggest worry. The Raiders are 231st in defensive efficiency, and the Longhorns have three guards averaging double figures.

Texas vs Colgate Picks and Prediction

Colgate has been a dangerous mid-major due to its 3-point shooting. However, Texas has held three of its last four opponents to six or fewer made 3-pointers. The Longhorns have a mobile rotation with the ability to switch most matchups. The Raiders’ shooting bigs should not pose much of a problem, and Hunter is an excellent defensive guard that will frustrate Colgate’s backcourt. Side with Texas in the march madness odds.
