NCAA Tourney Picks for Yale vs San Diego State Round of 32 Matchup

If you’re one of the people whose March Madness bracket had Yale in the second round of this year’s NCAA Tournament, you’re one of the few. Now the 13th-seeded Bulldogs try to follow up on their first-round upset of fourth-seeded Auburn when they face fifth-seeded San Diego State in a second-round matchup on Sunday in the East Region.

The Aztecs (25-10) advanced with a narrow victory over UAB in the first round and are looking to make another strong run after last year’s title-game appearance. Yale (23-9) is thought to be overmatched again, but as we saw in the first round, the Bulldogs aren’t going to pay attention to everyone’s expectations. The team’s belief in itself has us believing in them to go against the NCAAB odds and keep this one close, if not win it outright.

  • Yale has 16 ATS wins this season.
  • The Aztecs are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games as a favorite.
  • The over is 5-1 in the Bulldogs’ last six contests.

  • The over has hit in four of Yales’ last five games played on a Sunday.

Over/Under Pick: Over 128½ (-110)

While the odds to win NCAA championship aren’t high for either team, both are playing well, especially offensively. The best offensive player for the Bulldogs in their opening-round win was junior guard John Poulakidas, who scored 28 points, including hitting 6-of-9 from beyond the 3-point arc. He, like many Bulldogs, can shoot the ball from all over the floor, making it hard to focus on a certain area defensively.

The Aztecs’ offense is balanced after top scorer Jaedon LeDee, who averages 21.4 points per game. Four other San Diego State players average between 7.6 and 10.0 points and can come out with strong offensive performances as well. This won’t be an up-and-down affair, but both teams will be efficient scoring the ball, pushing this total to the over.

ATS Pick: Yale +5½ (-110)

The Aztecs rely on LeDee, which means the Bulldogs have a focus point for their solid defense. They’ll have to play strong in the paint against the strong LeDee, who also averages 8.4 rebounds and shoots 55.9% from the floor, but the Bulldogs were able to stand tall against a bigger Auburn front line in the first round.

San Diego State was part of ruining the March Madness bracket of nearly everyone when it made a run to the national title game a season ago. The Aztecs know the potential of a Cinderella and won’t take Yale lightly, but that doesn’t mean they’ll blow them out. This game is going to be tight throughout, but we like the experience of the Aztecs to get them the straight-up victory.
