New Mexico Lobos vs Clemson Tigers Betting Info March Madness, 1st Rd

The Clemson Tigers should be one of your top NCAA basketball picks against the spread on Friday when they meet the New Mexico Lobos in the opening round of the West Regional at Memphis.

Clemson is the sixth seed after losing three of its past four games, but the Tigers own six wins over NCAA Tournament teams – including one against West Regional top seed North Carolina. Coach Brad Brownell’s team lost 76-55 to Boston College early in the ACC tournament last time out.

Clemson Strong Underdog Bet vs New Mexico
Clemson Strong Underdog Bet vs New Mexico

The Tigers are likely the underdog because coach Richard Pitino’s 11th-seeded Lobos won four games in four days to win a difficult Mountain West tournament. New Mexico is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2014.

Clemson, making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2021, is +350 to make the Sweet Sixteen in the Las Vegas odds. The Lobos are +225 to win two games.

The Lobos are a 2 ½-point favorite despite being a lower seed as it prepares to take on the Tigers in the first round of the West Regional. The winner of the first-ever meeting will take on the team that survives the first-round game between Colgate and Baylor. Clemson is 9-7 in games away from home this season and New Mexico is 13-6.

  • New Mexico is 6-0 ATS at the sportsbook in its last six games and 23-11 on the season.
  • Under bettors are 5-2 in the last seven Tigers contests, but just 15-17 this season.
  • Lobos senior guard Jaelen House averaged 23 points in the Mountain West tournament.
  • Clemson senior center PJ Hall leads the team at 18.8 points per game – 21.3 in his last four.
  • The under is 4-0, according to NCAAB lines, in the last four New Mexico games and 16-18 on the season.
  • The Tigers are 4-3 as an underdog this season and 1-4 ATS in their last five neutral site contests.
  • The Lobos are 23-4 as a favorite and 8-0 ATS in their last eight neutral site games.
  • Clemson has hit the first half game total under in 17 of its last 27 outings.

Over/Under Pick: Under 152

The teams average almost 160 points combined, but you can expect both coaches to stress defense in this virtual pick’em contest.

The key will be scoring depth. New Mexico has Jamal Mashburn Jr. (14.4) and Donovan Dent (14.3) to go along with House. Clemson will need Joseph Girard (15.7), Chase Hunter (12.3) and Ian Schieffelin (9.6, 9.5 rebounds) to step up.

ATS Pick: Clemson +2 ½

The Tigers certainly have it in them to make a run. They just need to give PJ Hall some scoring help and put their best defensive foot forward. We were surprised by a few NCAA basketball point spreads and this is one of them.

Moneyline Pick: Clemson (+130)

The NCAA Tournament committee seemed to have a high opinion of the Mountain West Conference. We think it might be a little overrated. Take the ACC team in this one.

Player Prop: Joseph Girard III 17+ points (+149)

Joseph Girard is four 3-pointers from 100 for the season and must have a big game from long range for the Tigers to advance. He drained nine 3-pointers in three games for Syracuse in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
