When looking at the college basketball news, the arrival of heralded freshman Cooper Flagg at Duke was in the headlines. However, the sudden departures of veteran head coaches Tony Bennett at Virginia and Jim Larranaga at Miami might have had a bigger impact in the college basketball betting world.

1. Duke Hopes to Flagg Down an ACC Title
Duke was the team to beat at +110 in the preseason ACC championship odds and the Blue Devils continue to distance themselves from the rest of the ACC contenders. The Blue Devils are priced by the sports betting odds at -250 to win the ACC.
Three of the top four scorers for Duke are freshmen. Isaiah Evans had 18 points in a key win over Auburn while Kon Knueppel scored in double digits in games against Kentucky, Arizona and Kansas. However, the freshman generating all the buzz is Cooper Flagg.

Flagg, who leads Duke in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocked shots, is priced at +250 to win the Wooden Award as the National Player of the Year. Meanwhile, Washington Wizards and the New Orleans Pelicans have the shortest NCAAM specials odds to pick Flagg in the 2025 NBA Draft.

2. Clemson, North Carolina In the Running
Clemson was tied with Miami for the fourth-shortest ACC championship lines when the season began. While things have headed in the wrong direction for the Hurricanes, Clemson is 10-3 (2-0 in the ACC) going into 2025.
If not for some recent overtime losses to Memphis and South Carolina, the Tigers would be in the top 25 in both national polls. Chase Hunter, in his sixth season at Clemson, is flying a bit under the radar even though he is putting up career-best shooting and scoring numbers. The Tigers are the No. 2 favorite at +500 in the odds of winning the ACC title.

North Carolina lost three of its top four scorers and that has been evident at times as RJ Davis needs some help in the scoring department.
Per NCAA betting trends, the Tar Heels dropped three games in a row and that included losses by 15 points to Alabama and by 13 points to Auburn. The ACC odds have gone from +350 to +800 for the Tar Heels.

SMU has made itself at home in the ACC, The football team went undefeated in conference play during the regular season and the basketball team is also defying the sports betting odds with a strong start to the 2024-25 season.
