To quote an overused Twitter joke, all the Crimson Tide needed was Nick Saban to retire to finally become a basketball school. Alabama is making their first-ever Final Four appearance and the team’s reward is facing a UConn team that is a heavy favorite to win the title.

Here’s a look at how the Crimson Tide surprised in March Madness betting.

Alabama Upset UNC on Path to the Final Four

Alabama took the best shots from two potential Cinderellas in No. 13 Charleston followed by No. 12 Grand Canyon. Despite both schools being trendy upset picks, the Crimson Tide won both of these first two NCAA Tournament games by double digits.

Things would get much tougher on the road ahead. Alabama needed a career game from Grant Nelson to upset top-seeded North Carolina in the Sweet 16. Nelson posted 24 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks in the team’s win over the Tar Heels. Not only did the Bama forward put up good numbers, but Nelson had several clutch moments.

Next, Alabama survived a competitive game against No. 6 Clemson to notch an 89-82 victory in the Elite Eight. Guard Mark Sears has been the Crimson Tide’s most consistent player during March Madness.

If Alabama has a chance to upset UConn, it will be a combination of Sears and Nelson having strong outings to give the team a chance.

Alabama vs UConn: Crimson Tide (+12) Massive Dog

Alabama is the biggest underdog in the NCAA basketball odds for the two Final Four matchups. Bama is a 12-point underdog against UConn in the semifinal game.

The Huskies are a strong favorite to become back-to-back champions and have not lost a game in the NCAA Tournament by fewer than 17 points. Bama is also tied with NC State for the longest title odds in the NCAA basketball lines at +1600.

The Crimson Tide have rewarded bettors this season, going 20-15-1 ATS. Time will tell if Bama can become the first team to give UConn a match in the NCAA Tournament.
