Duke has been a factor on the national scene since the early 1960s. The 1977-78 team reached the March Madness championship game. Christian Laettner: A Legendary Figure

Laettner was a member of two national championship teams. He was the Most Outstanding Player in the 1991 Final Four and was the National Player of the Year in 1992. Talking about the Duke basketball legends without mentioning Laettner’s name is impossible.

Laettner played 23 March Madness games in his four seasons at Duke with the Blue Devils, winning 21. He set NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament career records in 23 games played, 407 points, and 142 free throws made.

He hit game-winning shots in regional finals against UConn in 1990 and Kentucky in 1992. The 1991-92 Duke squad is considered to be among the top 10 college basketball teams of all time.

Duke fans might have loved Laettner, but other fan bases had a different opinion. In an ESPN online poll, he was voted the most hated college basketball player in history.

Dawkins Set the Stage For Duke

Before Krzyzewski became the winningest men’s Division I college basketball coach of all time, there were those in Durham who wanted to send Coach K packing.

Krzyzewski was just 38-47 in his first three seasons. However, a talented recruiting class might have saved Coach K’s job. The rest is history, as Coach K is pretty high on the list of the top 25 college basketball coaches of all time.

Mark Alarie, Jay Bilas, and David Henderson helped Duke win 84 games in their final three seasons. However, the star of the class was Johnny Dawkins. The sweet-shooting guard graduated as the leading scorer in Duke history.

Dawkins was a two-time All-American who averaged at least 18 points in each of his four seasons.

He helped Duke reach the 1986 title game. He is on a short list of players with at least 2000 points, 500 rebounds, and 500 assists in his career. If he wasn’t in the ACC at the same time as North Carolina star Michael Jordan, who owns one of the best NBA jerseys of all time, more people would be talking about Dawkins.

As a freshman and sophomore at Duke, the son of former Dallas Cowboys running back Calvin Hill, Hill was a key member of national championship teams. As a senior, he led the Blue Devils to the national title game as he had a chance to join a select group of players with three national titles in four seasons.

Injuries kept Hill from being considered one of the best NBA players ever. He was still a seven-time NBA All-Star and is undoubtedly among the most famous Duke basketball players.

Redick Piled Up The Points

No Duke player has scored more points than J.J. Redick. While he did not play on a national championship team at Duke, he was a two-time ACC Tournament Most Outstanding Player who was listed among the leaders in several individual categories in NCAA tournament history at the time of his graduation. After some success as a player in the NBA, he returned to the league as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Gminski Was The Big Man On Campus

Mike Gminski was the most productive of the Duke players who hit the court before Coach K arrived.

After graduating from high school in three years, he helped Duke Gminski teamed with Jim Spanarkel and Gene Banks to lead Duke to the 1978 national championship game. Two years later, he had the Blue Devils within a game of another Final Four.

At the time of his graduation, Gminski held the Duke records for career points, rebounds, and blocked shots. He would average at least 10 points and 7.5 rebounds in seven of his first 10 NBA seasons.
