Big East, AAC Tourneys Coming into Focus

The college basketball sportsbook postseason has reached the day before Selection Sunday. Conference tournament semifinals and finals are the order of the day. Bubble teams are hoping those bid thieves –- teams that won’t get at-large bids -– fall short in their pursuit of a tournament championship and an automatic bid to March Madness next week. There are a few examples of bid thieves on Saturday, and we’ll start with one particular example just to set the stage for this day.

Big East Tournament Final

Georgetown Hoyas vs Creighton Bluejays

The Georgetown Hoyas are the No. 8 seed in the Big East Tournament. They will not make the NCAA Tournament if they lose here to Creighton in New York. They will get a bid only if they win the Big East Tournament championship. Bubble teams hope Creighton knocks out Georgetown since if Georgetown wins, Creighton will still get an at-large bid to March Madness and the Big East would essentially take an extra bid away from someone else.

The drama of this game is magnified by the fact that Patrick Ewing, Georgetown’s best and most famous player, has returned to his alma mater as head coach. He is coaching this game in Madison Square Garden, where he became a Hall of Fame NBA player with the New York Knicks. It would be a memory of a lifetime for Ewing if his Hoyas pulled the upset, but Creighton will be extremely difficult to deal with.

MAC Tournament Final

Ohio Bobcats vs Buffalo Bulls

This is a game in which Ohio is attacking the offensive glass and generating extra shot opportunities. Ohio was consistently a step quicker than the Toledo Rockets on Friday. Toledo was the top seed but Ohio made Toledo look like a second-rate team. Buffalo will have to match Ohio’s energy on the boards. The Bulls were taken into overtime by the Akron Zips in the semifinals but rebounded in overtime with a 7-0 run and strong defense to earn the win and a spot in this championship round. This college basketball betting game figures to go down to the wire in Cleveland.

Big 12 Tournament Final

Oklahoma State Cowboys vs Texas Longhorns

The Oklahoma State Cowboys might be the hottest non-Gonzaga team in the whole country. The Pokes are led by Cade Cunningham, an electric guard who is the current projected No. 1 college basketball pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Cunningham has been hitting long-range jumpers, driving to the basket, setting up teammates for great shots, and playing solid defense. Meanwhile, Cunningham’s Oklahoma State teammates are making the effort plays needed to give OSU all the resources it needs to win. This looks like an increasingly complete team that could continue to rise on the overall seed list.

Texas was down by seven points late in its Big 12 Tournament quarterfinal game against Texas Tech on Thursday, but the Longhorns kept coming. Matt Coleman was fouled in the final seconds of the game and he hit two free throws to give Texas a one-point victory. Texas then watched from a distance on Friday as the Kansas Jayhawks were disqualified from the Big 12 Tournament for a positive COVID-19 test. Texas, therefore, enters this final as a physically fresher and more rested team. The unknown question is if that day off on Friday will take the Longhorns out of rhythm. It is hard to know how any adjusted schedule caused by COVID-19 is going to impact teams. Oklahoma State and Texas played an overtime game earlier this season. The Big 12 is so relentlessly competitive that another close game should be expected when these two teams meet in Kansas City.

AAC Tournament Semifinal

Cincinnati Bearcats vs Wichita State Shockers

The Cincinnati Bearcats are hunting for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. They held the SMU Mustangs to one field goal over a span of nearly eight minutes on Friday in the AAC quarterfinals. They built a huge lead before holding on for a victory in the final minute, 74-71. Cincinnati wants to make this game ugly. Wichita State would like this game to be a showcase of skills.

The Shockers were dragged into a rugged and ugly game by South Florida on Friday, but they managed to prevail on the strength of their defense down the stretch. Wichita State trailed by six points with six minutes to go but steadily reeled in the Bulls at closing time, giving up just three points in those last six minutes.

Having escaped a huge upset bid on Friday, Wichita State should be a lot more motivated to play this game on Saturday. The regular-season AAC champion might have gotten complacent versus South Florida. Expect a more focused effort from WSU here.

AAC Tournament Semifinal

Houston Cougars vs Memphis Tigers

This is a game in which Memphis will try to get revenge for a recent event. This past Sunday, Memphis and Houston were tied in the final five seconds of regulation. Houston banked in a 40-foot shot to stun the Tigers and force them to win the AAC Tournament in order to get into the NCAA Tournament. Memphis will have that memory fresh in its mind as it prepares for this contest.

Memphis coach Penny Hardaway, who played for the Tigers when they reached the Elite Eight in 1992, will try to get his team to the NCAA Tournament. It simply isn’t going to be easy for a favorite son of Memphis basketball. Houston didn’t win the AAC regular-season title, so the Cougars – the highest-ranked team in the AAC though they aren’t the top seed in this tournament – will be motivated to win a championship on sports betting tournament weekend.
