College Basketball Betting: Houston, BYU Are Teams to Watch

The latest top 25 ranking is not quite as packed as recent weeks but the conference’s top contenders are still among the favorites in the odds to win March Madness. The latest AP Poll features four Big 12 teams, all ranked inside the top 15.

We have seen this number as high as seven in recent weeks, but teams at the bottom of the rankings like Texas Tech stumbled to fall out of the rankings.

Here is what you need to know about the Big 12.

Houston Claims Top Spot in Top 25 Rankings

No. 1 Houston continues to be the class of the Big 12 after their overtime victory over Baylor. The win catapulted the Cougars up to the top spot in the latest AP Poll.

Houston followed up this signature win with an eight-point victory over Cincinnati. The Cougars are expected to be favored in the college basketball odds for their final three games. Houston’s regular-season finale against No. 7 Kansas is the only matchup remaining on the Cougars schedule against a ranked opponent.

The Cougars head into the weekend with an impressive 25-3 record but have not been quite as strong in the NCAAB odds. Houston is 13-13-2 against the spread this season.

The Cougars’ stout defense has their point total trending towards the under. Houston’s games have gone under on 16 occasions with the over hitting 12 times.

Will Iowa State Be a Legitimate Threat to Win the Big 12 Tournament?

With the Big 12 tournament around the corner, who has a chance to upset Houston for the conference title? Look no further than No. 8 Iowa State who has several signature wins under their belt.

The Cyclones have wins over Kansas, TCU, Texas, and yes, Houston. Yet, Iowa State was unsuccessful in their last attempt with the Cyclones losing by eight points to Houston on Feb. 19.

Iowa State has been stellar at the window going 18-8-2 ATS this season. The over has hit 15 times with the under cashing 13 times.

BYU Hands Kansas First Loss at Allen Fieldhouse

We had criticized Kansas for their stumbles on the road, but now the Jayhawks’ unbeaten streak at home has come to a close. Kansas was undefeated this season before BYU came away with an eight-point win at Allen Fieldhouse on Feb. 27.

The Cougars have been hard to predict from game to game making BYU a difficult pick once March Madness betting begins. BYU’s upset over Kansas came after the Cougars lost by 10 to Kansas State.

Yet, just in the last two weeks, BYU has wins over Kansas and Baylor. The Cougars have been strong at the window going 16-12 against the spread in the NCAAB lines. The under has hit in 15 games with the over cashing in 13 matchups.

Is Kansas a True Final Four Contender?

The Jayhawks are better than most teams, but can you trust Kansas like the other college hoops contenders? Kansas once again fell to a team where the Jayhawks were sizable favorites, but this time the BYU loss came at home.

I have my doubts about Kansas as a legitimate Final Four contender. The Jayhawks have been vulnerable in road games, which is essentially all of the NCAA tournament. It is worth noting that the Kansas faithful will travel, but there is still reason for concern.

Kansas is 12-16 against the spread this season. The under has hit in 15 Jayhawks games, with 12 matchups going over.

Baylor Has an Opportunity to Rise Up the Rankings

One team that has a chance to give Kansas another scare is Baylor with their upcoming marquee matchup on March 2. The Bears can rise up the March Madness seeding with upcoming games against projected NCAA tournament teams: Kansas, Texas, and Texas Tech.
