Ohio State-Michigan on Stacked College Hoops Menu

The college basketball postseason has hit the final few days of conference tournament play. Matchups are set for Saturday. Let’s look at one set of online betting matchups on the day before Selection Sunday.

America East Tournament Final

This game is for an automatic bid to March Madness. The sportsbook favorite in the America East Conference was Vermont, but the Catamounts were upset in the conference tournament. UMass Lowell and Hartford will play for a surprising and unexpected automatic berth to the big show next week. The fact that neither team expected to be in this position should create a lot of pressure and uncertainty.

ACC Tournament Final

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Florida State Seminoles

This is a game in which Florida State should be favored. Georgia Tech’s excellent guard, Jose Alvarado, suffered a slight knee injury in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals against Miami on Thursday. Georgia Tech did not have to play a game against Virginia on Friday in the ACC semifinals because the Cavaliers were disqualified due to a positive COVID-19 test, but Alvarado is still not likely to be 100%. That one fact will make it harder for Alvarado to beat Florida State’s defense with dribble penetration and overall quickness.

Florida State is not an especially strong offensive team, but the Seminoles have a lot of depth and length to use on defense. They are physical and well-conditioned. It will be hard for Georgia Tech to generate good shots in a halfcourt offense. Georgia Tech will hope for a game scenario in which FSU commits a lot of live-ball turnovers, which become fast breaks for the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech will try to score in transition before Florida State’s halfcourt defense can set up and get organized. If Georgia Tech forces enough turnovers and creates enough points off turnovers, it can win this championship game.

Big Ten Tournament Semifinal

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Michigan Wolverines

Michigan beat Ohio State 92-87 in a classic game earlier. Ohio State will try to get revenge. Michigan forward Isaiah Livers is out with a foot injury. Michigan loses a long and agile defender and a solid 3-point shooter. That could really limit the Wolverines in the coming weeks.

Ohio State beat Purdue on Friday in the Big Ten quarterfinals. The Buckeyes took an 18-point lead at halftime with Kyle Young dominating the Boilermakers. Young was injured in the second half and Purdue forced overtime before the Buckeyes regrouped to win. Injuries and health will therefore figure prominently in the outcome of this contest.

Big Ten Semifinal

Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Illinois Fighting Illini

This is the second semifinal between third-seeded Iowa and second-seeded Illinois. Iowa was worried this past weekend that veteran wing Joe Weiskamp would not be healthy enough to play in the Big Ten Tournament, but he did take the floor for Friday night’s quarterfinal win over Wisconsin, and he looked physically fine. Iowa is in line to be a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and Illinois is likely to be a No. 1 seed in the Big Dance. This is a high-level matchup between hot teams. It could be the single best game of the day in college basketball betting.

SEC Tournament Semifinal

Tennessee Volunteers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

This is the first of the SEC semifinals in Nashville. Tennessee is the fourth seed and Alabama is the top seed. This is a game in which fans will relish the showdown between Tennessee’s hard-nosed defense and Alabama’s 3-point-shooting offense. Alabama won the first round but Tennessee has looked strong on defense in recent weeks.

That is the crowd-pleasing part of the matchup. Yet, what might decide the game is the Tennessee offense going up against an improved Alabama defense, which has changed the Tide’s fortunes under head coach Nate Oats. Tennessee doesn’t have a single elite scorer. If the game is close in the final minutes, who takes and makes the big shot for the Vols? That’s a hard question to answer, and it’s why Alabama has the edge in this game. Tennessee’s offense has usually not responded well to big challenges this season.

SEC Tournament Semifinal: LSU Tigers vs. Arkansas Razorbacks

The second SEC semifinal is between third-seeded LSU and second-seeded Arkansas. Arkansas comfortably beat LSU in the most recent meeting between these teams a few weeks ago. The Hogs are in line to be a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Eric Musselman has been excellent since coming to Fayetteville from the University of Nevada. LSU has an electric scorer, JaVonte Smart, who can make plays from any spot on the court. Arkansas, however, has the quickness to stay with Smart on defense and neutralize LSU’s halfcourt offense. This will be a tough task for LSU.

MAAC Tournament Final

Iona Gaels vs. Fairfield Stags

This is a remarkable matchup between the No. 9 and No. 7 seeds in the MAAC Tournament. Fairfield hasn’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 1997. The Stags are 10-16 and would have – if they win – one of the worst records of any team in NCAA Tournament history. Iona has a huge story attached to its rise: Rick Pitino. The Hall of Fame coach has won national championships at Kentucky and Louisville, and he has taken Providence to the Final Four. He coached in Greece for a period of time but wanted back into the college game. If he makes the NCAA Tournament, his team will be seeded 15 or 16. Pitino will be coaching the underdog team he used to crush in the first round at Kentucky and Louisville. It would be a remarkable turn of events.

It’s about time to play in the BetUs March Madness bracket. Winning could net you $1 million!
