March Madness Update: UConn, Marquette, Creighton Top Big East National Title Contenders

UConn is looking to make some history by joining Duke and Florida as the only teams to win back-to-back national titles dating back to the 1980s. The NCAA basketball picks have the Huskies as the team to beat even with their recent loss to Creighton.

Creighton and Marquette are in a position to join UConn as top 16 seeds when the March Madness bracket is announced. The question is whether the Big East will get five teams into the tournament field as was the case a season ago.

When it comes to making NCAA basketball predictions keep in mind that the top five teams in the Big East are a combined 63-8 at home.

UConn is the only Big East team undefeated in Big East play at home while the Huskies join Marquette, Creighton, and Seton Hall as teams with winning records on the road.

When looking at the college basketball futures odds, UConn is first with +500 odds of winning the NCAAM championship. Marquette’s odds to win March Madness have moved from +1600 to +2500. Creighton is the next closest Big East team with +3000 odds to win it all.

Keep on ready for more on the March Madness hopes of the teams from the Big East.

Big Dance-Bound

Not even a double-digit loss at Creighton is likely to knock UConn off the top line when the March Madness bracket comes out.

The Huskies are fourth in the NCAA NET rankings and are tied for the national lead with nine Quad 1 wins and have played the second-most Quad 1 games in the country. It is a matter of when and not if UConn will clinch the Big East regular-season title and that is one of the three championships the Huskies could claim in the coming weeks.

Creighton made a huge move to No. 9 in the NCAA NET rankings after the win against UConn. There are three Quad 2 losses on the resume for the Blue Jays but that shouldn’t keep them from being a top 16 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Marquette is 13th in the NCAA NET rankings as the Big East has more teams in the top 13 in the NET rankings than the ACC, the Big Ten, and the Pac-12.

There is a bit of a dropoff after the Big 3 with Villanova the only other Big East team in the top 40.

On the Bubble

Providence is sitting at 18-9 so a 20-win season is likely. Some other numbers are a little concerning.

The Friars are 45th in the strength of schedule with games remaining against Villanova, Marquette, and UConn. The NCAA NET ranking for the Friars is at 56 and the 8-9 record in Quad 1 and Quad 2 games is not going to wow the selection committee. Ten Quad 4 games won’t help either.

Seton Hall is 10-5 in league play in one of the best conferences in the country but will a fourth-place finish in the Big East get the Pirates a March Madness invitation?

Seton Hall is 65th in the NCAA NET rankings with a 5-5 record versus Quad 1 teams. There are games remaining against Creighton and UConn.

It can be dangerous to rely simply on the NCAA NET rankings. A strong strength of schedule has St. John’s at No. 50 but with the Red Storm currently tied for eighth in the Big East, there is plenty of work to be done.

Wait ‘Til Next Year

The NCAA NET rankings for Xavier and Butler are 61st and 62nd and that might sound promising. However, Xavier is limping along with a 13-13 record and Butler is 4-10 in Quad 1 games so it is hard to imagine either of them in the Field of 68 without winning the Big East title.

At least they are in the conversation. We’re not sure that either Georgetown or DePaul would receive a March Madness invitation if the tournament expanded to 136 teams.
