We are starting to see some of the top non-power conference teams struggle with the weight of high expectations. No. 10 Memphis and No. 16 Utah State were among the ranked teams to sustain upsets this past week. Both teams were heavy favorites in the NCAA basketball lines and will continue to hold this status despite their recent losses.

Memphis Shocked by South Florida
Memphis started the season strong with a challenging schedule. Now, the Tigers are fighting a letdown as evidenced by a 74-73 loss to South Florida.
Memphis blew a 15-point halftime lead despite being a double-digit favorite against the Bulls. After the loss, head coach Penny Hardaway was candid about the team’s performance.
“Bad loss,” Hardaway said, per ESPN. “National TV. Scoring 26 points in the second half after scoring 46 in the first. But when you are not playing team basketball that can happen.”
Despite a strong start, Memphis has been disappointing to bettors going 7-11 against the spread in the Las Vegas odds. The Tigers have been particularly bad in covering at home going 2-9.
Memphis is likely to drop in the AP Poll given the upcoming schedule will feature the Tigers as heavy favorites. The upcoming schedule includes matchups against Tulane, UAB and Rice.
Welcome to the Party, Dayton
No. 21 Dayton is a new non-power conference addition to the Top 25. The Flyers’ key wins thus far include LSU, Cincinnati and St. John’s.
Dayton is going to find it challenging to improve its resume given the upcoming schedule. The Flyers have upcoming matchups against Rhode Island and La Salle.
As of Jan. 19, Dayton is 14-2 and 9-7 against the spread in the NCAA basketball odds. The Flyers are 8-0 at home. An early look ahead to March Madness has Dayton projected to be a No. 5 seed.
Will Gonzaga Miss the NCAA Tournament?
March could look a lot different with Gonzaga projected to miss the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs are listed among the last four teams out with two months to go before the start of March Madness.
It is not all bad news in Spokane as head coach Mark Few notched his 700th career win with the Zags’ victory over Pepperdine. It remains to be seen if Few can work his magic with a roster that is down compared to recent seasons. Earlier this month, the Zags fell out of the Top 25 for the first time since 2009.

Gonzaga is 7-9 against the spread in the college basketball odds. A few notable betting trends when it comes to the Zags. The Bulldogs are 3-2 against the spread in the team’s last five games.
The total has gone over in two of these five games. The Zags are 3-3 against the spread in the team’s last six road matchups. Gonzaga will still be sizable favorites in upcoming matchups against San Diego and San Francisco.
Down Goes Utah State
The shine on Utah State is starting to fade. Following a one-point win over UNLV, the Aggies sustained a 13-point loss at New Mexico.
New Mexico went up eight spots in the NET — from 36 to 28 — following last night’s win over Utah State.
Boise State dropped 10 spots in the NET — from 44 to 54 — after last night’s loss to UNLV.

Utah State faces Fresno State followed by potential tourney team Boise State. The Aggies still sit at 16-2 overall while going 8-7-1 against the spread this season. Utah State has disappointed at the sportsbook on the road going 3-4 against the spread when away from home. The over has hit in three of the last five Aggies’ games.
