Bet On NIT, The OTHER Men’s College Basketball Tournament

While making the March Madness NCAA Tournament is the ultimate dream, missing out on the Big Dance can be a gut-wrenching experience for programs that grinded out the grueling four-month season.

But fear not, my friends, for all is not lost! Enter the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), a beacon of hope for 32 teams that didn’t quite make the cut for the NCAA Tournament. It’s a chance to lace up those sneakers and prove their worth on the hardwood, showcasing their skills and leaving it all on the court.

Last year, we saw a prime example of this opportunity when the North Carolina Tar Heels, a powerhouse program, snubbed an invitation to the NIT after missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010 (excluding the 2020 competition, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic). But where one team declined, another embraced the challenge with open arms. Multiple high-major programs such as Oklahoma, Pitt, St. John’s, and Indiana all declined an invitation to the 2024 NIT after missing out on the NCAA Tournament.

Enter the North Texas Mean Green, a team that was more than happy to accept a bid to the NIT. And you know what? They didn’t just show up; they conquered. The Mean Green went on a remarkable run, ultimately claiming their first NIT title and etching their names into the history books.

So, as we approach another edition of the NIT, let’s raise a glass to the teams that will seize this opportunity. They may not be dancing in the NCAA Tournament, but they’ll be putting on a show of their own, showcasing their passion, grit, and determination to the world.

Who knows? Maybe this year’s NIT champion will be the Cinderella story we all love to root for, defying the odds and proving that the journey to greatness can take many paths. Buckle up, folks, because the madness is just getting started!
