The NCAAB odds show UConn and Purdue are the co-favorites at +700 with about one month to go before March Madness tips off. The defending champs have wins this season over Texas, North Carolina, Gonzaga and Creighton.

UConn has been led by their backcourt this season. Guard Tristen Newton who is averaging 15 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game. Fellow backcourt mate Cam Spencer is leading the team in scoring at 15.2 points while adding 4.6 boards, 3.4 assists and 1.5 steals per contest.

Can March Madness Bettors Forget Purdue’s Loss to 16 Seed in 2023?

The question for Purdue is not their regular-season resume. It seems the Boilermakers have that nailed, but there is plenty of skepticism about the team having success in March.

Purdue is out to prove the team can make a deep NCAA tournament run after being upset by No. 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson in 2023. The Boilermakers are once again led by big man Zach Edey.

This season, Edey is averaging 23.3 points, 11.8 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per contest. Purdue’s signature wins include victories over Tennessee, Marquette, Alabama, Arizona, Illinois and Wisconsin.

The Boilermakers have the most impressive resumes when it comes to defeating top teams. The casual bettor is likely going to be fading Purdue in the March Madness betting.

Purdue is a team to keep an eye on next month. The Boilermakers could offer some value if you’re willing to forget the recency bias of their lack of postseason success.

Houston Is Looking Strong After Move to Big 12

There was skepticism that Houston would be able to avoid a setback after making the jump from the AAC to Big 12. Instead, the Cougars look like one of the best teams in college basketball.

As an added bonus, Houston enters March Madness more battle tested than ever before thanks to a brutal Big 12 schedule. The Cougars are third in the odds to win March Madness at +900.

Houston has wins over Dayton, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, BYU, Texas, Kansas State and Cincinnati. The Cougars have a chance to improve their resume with upcoming matchups against Iowa State, Baylor, Oklahoma and Kansas to close out the regular season.

As an aside, the Big 12 looks to be the class of college basketball. These teams’ records may look a little worse than their peers when entering March Madness. Yet, it will be hard to argue with their preparation entering the NCAA tournament thanks to the depth of the conference.

Arizona and Tennessee Are Next in the March Madness Odds

Two more contenders to consider are Arizona and Tennessee. Both teams are next in the NCAA basketball odds to win the title at +1200.

Arizona’s best wins include No. 9 Duke, Michigan State, No. 20 Wisconsin and No. 15 Alabama. The Pac-12 does not appear to be as strong in its final season with plenty of questions about teams like UCLA, USC and Oregon.

Tennessee has wins over Illinois, Ole Miss, Florida, Alabama and Kentucky. The Vols were also tested with losses to Kansas, Purdue and North Carolina.

There is plenty of time for things to change before March Madness tips off. Yet, the college basketball lines indicate these five contenders are viewed in a different light than the field of other tournament teams. We all know that sleepers are sure to emerge as Final Four threats despite the long odds.
