Alabama Overcomes Toubling Distraction
The Alabama Crimson Tide have had a season to remember thus far, reaching the top four in the country and looking like a legitimate title contender. Unfortunately, reserve forward Darius Miles’ off-court troubles – he was charged with capital murder on Sunday – proved to be quite a distraction to the team this week, though they were able to overcome it with a win over Vanderbilt on Tuesday.
“I did see some guys break down postgame,” Alabama coach Nate Oats said after Tuesday’s win. “I think they’ve been bottling some stuff up. We’ve got a job to do. We’ve got to get to the game. We got to the game and took care of business, and then it’s almost like a big relief. The game’s over, and we can let out a sigh of relief.”
Freshman Brandon Miller led the effort against the Commodores with 30 points and 10 rebounds, as he has for much of this season. The 6-9 forward is leading the team with 20.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game and is shooting 46.2% from 3-point range.
Junior guard Mark Sears is the only other double-digit scorer on the team, averaging 14.5 points per game. Sears had just three points in Tuesday’s win but he is explosive, scoring 26 points in a win over then-No. 15 Arkansas on Jan. 11.
Missouri Bounces Back With Big Victory
The Missouri Tigers were struggling heading into Wednesday’s contest with No. 25 Arkansas, having dropped two straight, and they fell behind by 10 with five minutes to play against the Razorbacks. But the Tigers may have saved their season with a rally for a three-point victory at home.
Now Missouri takes on the top team in the SEC and will need to avoid falling into a hole against the powerful Crimson Tide. The Tigers have been better at home, averaging 65.3 points over their last three road games compared to 82.0 points in their last two contests at Mizzou Arena.
Senior guard Kobe Brown leads the Missouri offensive attack with 15.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Brown had 17 points and six rebounds in the win over the Razorbacks, including a pair of free throws with 29 seconds to play.
Senior guard DeAndre Gholston contributed 16 points and three assists to the comeback win. Gholston is averaging 10.8 points and hitting 33.3% from the 3-point line.
