The Auburn Tigers renew their in-state rivalry with the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide on Wednesday. With both programs making major strides in the last few seasons, this matchup has turned up the intensity. This rivalry could go beyond football if both basketball teams continue on this path.
Auburn (19-10, 9-7 SEC) contended in the last matchup on Feb. 11 but fell short with a 77-69 loss. Wednesday’s clash could get chippy fast as the Tigers will come in with a scrappy mentality. Will Auburn get the much-needed win to get off of the NCAA Tournament bubble? The Crimson Tide (25-4, 15-1) have other plans as they look to improve their play after going 1-2 against the spread (ATS) in the last three games.

Auburn Declawed?
Before February, Auburn was 6-2 in conference play and contending for an SEC title. The past month was a disaster, as the Tigers went 3-5 outright and ATS. Following an embarrassing 86-54 loss against Kentucky on Saturday, Auburn is suddenly on the March Madness bubble with a No. 11 seed.
The road ahead gets no easier with the Tigers traveling to Tuscaloosa on Wednesday, followed by a battle with No. 12 Tennessee to cap the regular season. If Auburn can find one win this week, it should safely make the NCAA Tournament. However, that’s easier said than done, especially against Alabama. The Crimson Tide are 14-0 at home while the Tigers are 4-7 on the road.
Auburn played close with Alabama in the last matchup due to extra possessions. The Tigers had 16 offensive rebounds and three fewer turnovers. However, the Crimson Tide shot 59.2% from the field. The Tigers’ defense must improve, especially after allowing Kentucky to post a 56.1% field goal percentage. Guards Wendell Green Jr. (13.8 points) and K.D. Johnson (8.2 points) must be more efficient on the offensive end as well.
Alabama Winning Despite Turmoil
We can’t talk about Alabama without addressing the elephant in the room. This team has been in the headlines for the wrong reasons. The program has been in turmoil since Darius Miles was charged with capital murder following a fatal shooting on campus.
It only got worse over the last week after coach Nate Oats made questionable statements, and star forward Brandon Miller failed to read the room by continuing to do his pregame pat-down routine. The program has finally stayed out of the news over the last few days. Alabama has managed to keep winning with the postseason approaching.
This is a true national title contender as NCAAB odds have the Crimson Tide as the third choice (+850). Miller continues to shine and posted 41 points in Feb. 22’s overtime win against South Carolina. Alabama is averaging 90.7 points in the last three games, but the defense has underperformed. In fact, the Tide failed to cover back-to-back games while opponents have made at least nine 3-pointers. However, Auburn is in the bottom-25 nationally at 30.2% from three.
