Best College Basketball Picks Today: Take Indiana -6.5 and These Totals on January 08

Iowa and North Carolina delivered in our Jan 7 best college basketball bets but that was not the case in the Marquette-Georgetown matchup. We are still going back to the Big East as points might be hard to come by in the game between Butler and Providence.

We look for the best college basketball odds today to find the best bets ahead.

Top 3 College Basketball Picks Today

1. Indiana ATS-6.5 (-115)

Indiana began 2025 with hard-earned victories over Rutgers and Penn State to push its winning streak to four games. Indiana won despite leading scorer Malik Reneau getting hurt early in the matchup with Rutgers and not playing at Penn State.

Reneau did make the trip to Penn State so perhaps he is close to returning. The Hoosiers saw others raise their level of play without Reneau on the court. Keep an eye on the college basketball injuries.

Arizona transfer Oumar Ballo averaged 21 points and 12.5 rebounds in those two games.

When looking at college basketball prop bet options, keep in mind that Ballo averaged 12 rebounds in the three games against USC last season.

The final three games of 2024 for USC came against Montana State, CSU Northridge and Southern so it is probably not too surprising that the Trojans looked unprepared for the set up to Big Ten play in a loss to Michigan.

When making college basketball picks today, take to cover as 6.5-point favorites.

Bet This Pick: Indiana -6.5 (-115)

2. Butler vs Providence Under 138.5

Providence nearly pulled off an eye-opening upset as the Friars headed to face defending Big East champion UConn without three players including leading scorer Bryce Hopkins and led the favored Huskies by 14 points early in the second half.

The Friars lost the game but it was clear that they can hold their own against the elite conference teams even without Hopkins. Hopkins may return soon but Providence fans have heard that before.

Next up is a showdown with a Butler team that is 0-4 in the Big East. The Bulldogs have been competitive in all four losses and the Big East schedule makers did Butler no favors as the Bulldogs opened Big East play against Marquette, UConn, Villanova and St. John’s.

Butler has scored 65 and 62 in its last two games. Providence is coming off an 84-point showing in the UConn loss but the Friars struggled to hit the 70-point mark in its first three conference games.

One NCAAB prediction today is to have the Butler-Providence game land under 138.5.

Bet This Pick: Butler vs Providence Under 138.5

3. Virginia vs California Over 132

Picking Virginia games to land over has proven to be a risky proposition in recent years with the Cavaliers playing at a nap-inducing pace. In the last three seasons, the only ACC team to have more games land under the NCAAB betting odds total is Duke and that is more of a sign of Duke dealing with much higher totals than Virginia.

In California’s first season in the ACC, nine of the 14 games have landed over the total. The Bears have allowed at least 80 points in each of their first three conference games. Take the Virginia-Cal game to go over 132.

Bet This Pick: Virginia vs California Over 132
