Bet Butler To Cover Against Xavier

Two teams with sub-.500 Big East records square off on Tuesday night when Butler travels to Xavier. Despite having a worse straight-up record, the NCAAB lines still tab Xavier as 5½-point home favorites. But Butler has proven it can win big conference road games as they upset Marquette less than a week ago.

Butler, picked to finish second-to-last in the Big East preseason coaches’ poll, had an impressive 9-2 non-conference record. It has come back to earth in conference play, though, losing four of its last five games overall. But its lone win in that stretch came against Marquette. Xavier, meanwhile, got back in the win column after two losses when it won on the road at Providence on Saturday as a small underdog in the college basketball lines.

Against The Spread Pick: Butler +5½

Xavier has not been a sure thing at home this season. They suffered three outright losses at the Cintas Center toward the end of non-conference play, including against Oakland and Delaware. While they have bounced back since, this home-court advantage does not appear as strong as the college basketball odds makers are making it out to be. The key for the Musketeers will be defense. They are 2-1 in Big East play when allowing 66 or fewer points. But in their other two losses, they have surrendered at least 80.

On the other hand, Butler has struggled on the road. Its win at Marquette seems to be an outlier, as the Bulldogs have fallen at St. John’s and Providence. If they want to counteract the Musketeers defense, they will have to rely on an offense that put 81 on a strong UConn defense. Michigan State transfer Pierre Brooks contributes 16.1 points per game and has eclipsed double-figures in every outing. Trending in the other direction is DJ Davis, who has scored four in each of the last two contests after eclipsing 20 in the previous three.

Xavier is led offensively by Rice transfer Quincy Olivari, who sits fourth in the Big East at 17.8 points per game. Dayvion McKnight is fourth in the conference with 5.3 assists while chipping in 9.5 points.

We feel Butler’s offense will keep the game close enough behind its offense and stay within the 5½-point college basketball line.
