Bet on Houston to Cover Spread vs Cincinnati

On the heels of five straight wins, Houston has risen to No. 1 in the college basketball rankings for the first time this season. It will look to maintain that standing as March Madness approaches when they host Cincinnati on Tuesday night. The college basketball betting odds have the Cougars as 13 ½-point favorites.

Cincinnati vs Houston Over/Under Pick: Over 132½

Houston has relied on its defense this season, only giving up a ridiculous 56.1 points per game, best in the nation, highlighted by a 39-point effort against Rice and 54 points to a then-ranked Texas Tech. Kelvin Sampson’s squad is also tops in the nation in allowing its opponents to shoot just 37.6 percent from the field and forcing over 16 turnovers. Cincinnati is not an offensive juggernaut, scoring just 74.9 points per contest, including a 57-point showing in its most recent loss to TCU. And Houston is no better, averaging only 74.2 points.

This all points in the direction of the score staying under the 132½ total allotted by the college basketball odds makers. However, Houston’s defense has not been quite as strong in Big 12 play, allowing a still-strong 62.4 points per game.

However, in Houston’s last five games, the total has surpassed 132 four times, with the only exception being the first meeting with the Bearcats, where the scoring stalled out at 129. But we believe the two teams will score just enough to exceed the 132½-point total in the Las Vegas NCAAB odds.

Cincinnati vs Houston ATS Pick: Houston -13½

Despite its offense not matching its defense, Houston has shot the ball well during its five-game winning streak, connecting on just under 45 percent of its field goal attempts. While Baylor transfer LJ Cryer still leads the team in scoring, he has been inconsistent during this stretch. Point guard Jamal Shead, who has continued his career ascent this season, has reached double digits in all five contests while breaking the 20-point threshold in two of them. He’s also dishing out nearly six assists per game, including 10 against Baylor – his third time reaching double digits on the season.

Cincinnati does not boast the same depth as the Cougars, with only wings Dan Skillings Jr. and Simas Lukosius as well as guard Day Day Thomas averaging double-figures. Neither of them average more than 13 points per game. We believe the Cougars’ strong defense and the Bearcats lack of star power will allow the Cougars to control the tempo and ultimately win the game while eclipsing the 13½-point college basketball spread.
