An impassioned rant by head coach Rick Pitino lit a fire under the Johnnies, who have responded by winning their last two games, including an upset win over Creighton. Despite those wins, it seems the Red Storm will need to go on a run at the Big East Tournament in order to make the NCAA Tournament. Butler is trending in the same direction, losing its last four games, with its handful of quality wins keeping its tournament hopes alive. Neither team can afford a loss at the moment.

St. John’s vs Butler O/U Pick: Under 153

St. John’s has bizarre offensive trends on the season. Despite attempting the 16th-most field goals in the nation, it connects on only 44.2 percent of them. They take a comically low number of 3-pointers at just over 21 per game. They managed to beat Creighton while taking eight shots from beyond the arc, connecting on two. In addition to the lack of efficiency, the Johnnies have not been particularly stellar on defense, giving up over 71.2 points per game, though they did just hold a strong Creighton team to 66. Butler has been even worse on the defensive end, giving up 74 points per game. In addition to Butler’s strong season averages on offense, it poses a difficult decision when making your college basketball over/under picks. But one trend we’re following is that during Butler’s losing streak, the under has hit in every game and the total has failed to eclipse the 153-point mark, the number set for the St. John’s matchup by the college basketball odds makers. We believe the Bulldogs’ struggles will continue and despite a recent offensive surge, the Red Storm’s efficiency issues will keep the total under.

St. John’s vs Butler ML Pick: St. John’s

Butler’s losing skid has coincided with struggles from two of its best players, Pierre Brooks II and DJ Davis, both averaging below their season averages. Brooks had reached double-figures in the team’s first 11 Big East conference games. The Bulldogs will need strong performances from these two as well as glue guy Posh Alexander and big wing Jahmyl Telfort.

St. John’s has seen point guard Daniss Jenkins step up in its last two wins, scoring at least 15 points and five assists. Jordan Dingle has scored at least 18 points in that span, re-establishing himself as one of the team’s key players. Perhaps the Johnnies will need to attempt more than eight threes to win this one, but they’ve proven they can win without the three ball. We believe St. John’s will continue to ride its momentum and get the elusive road win, greatly harming Butler’s March Madness odds. While we believe betting the Johnnies to cover the 1½-point college basketball spread would be a fair bet, we will take the better odds with the money line.
