ATS Pick: UConn -6

One of the keys of the season for UConn has been inconsistent 3-point shooting. Against DePaul, senior Cam Spencer and junior AlexKaraban were firing on all cylinders, going 7-for-11 from downtown while combining for 37 points. Spencer surprisingly leads the team in scoring following a scoreless effort from star point guard TristenNewton. The senior had been playing at an All-American level and still leads the team in rebounding, assists and steals. The silent night for Newton put the Huskies depth on display.

The X-factor for the Huskies in freshman phenom and potential NBA draft lottery selectionStephon Castle, who is coming into his own after missing six games with a knee injury. Castle dominated down the stretch against St. John’s and followed that up with a career-high 14 points against DePaul on over 85 percent shooting while chipping in four boards and seven assists. Thanks in part to Newton and Castle, the Huskies are 10th in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio.

While UConn entered the season with sky-high expectations, Butler was picked to finish 11th in the preseason Big East Coaches’ Poll. Thad Matta led the Bulldogs to a strong 9-2 non-conference record featuring multiple power-conference wins.

A host of incoming transfers has rejuvenated the program, led by former Michigan State Spartan Pierre Brooks II, who leads the team with 16.4 points per game. Posh Alexander, formerly of Big East rival St. John’s, fills up the stat sheet with over 10 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals per game. UC Irvine transfer DJ Davis is heating up with five straight games in double figures and has eclipsed the 20-point mark in his last two.

The Bulldogs average over 82 points as a unit, though UConn allows its opponents to score just 63.6 points per game, tied for best in the Big East. One area where Butler may have the advantage is down low. UConn is without 7-foot-2 sophomore Donovan Clingan. Despite only averaging seven points, Bucknell transfer Andre Screen shoots a stellar 67 percent from the floor. Meanwhile, Georgia State transfer Jalen Thomas grabs 6.7 rebounds per contest. The Huskies will rely on junior Samson Johnson and may need minutes from inexperienced freshman Youssouf Singare down low.

If UConn can get production from its big and have another strong game from three, they should be able to cover the college basketball spread of six points.
