Charleston Will Need Big Performance For Upset
The Charleston Cougars are going to have a height disadvantage against the very tall front line of the North Carolina Tar Heels on Friday night, so they’re going to need to be able to score from the perimeter. Charleston team gave North Carolina all it could handle a season ago, leading at halftime before eventually falling by 11.
Guard Reyne Smith had 19 points in that contest as a freshman, and he started his sophomore season in much the same way with a team-high 24 points in the win over Chattanooga, including five 3-pointers. Smith will have to be on his game again if the Cougars are going to pull the upset.
Forward Charles Lampten will be put to the test on both ends of the floor against the Tar Heels. The 6-foot-11 senior will need to be physical while avoiding fouls. Lampten had just three points in the season-opening win but grabbed eight rebounds and his presence in the paint will be key for Charleston.
North Carolina Eyes More Offense
The North Carolina Tar Heels have plenty of offensive talent, but they weren’t hitting on all cylinders in their season-opening win over UNC Wilmington. North Carolina took an 11-point halftime lead but couldn’t build upon it, settling for a 13-point win at home over the Seahawks.
“I think we all came out a little rusty,” North Carolina forward Armando Bacot said after Monday’s win. “It’s not easy winning games. I’m glad it’s the first game and not later on in the season.”
Bacot had 16 points and nine rebounds in the opener, and he’ll be a key for the Tar Heels’ chances of getting back to the national championship game again this season. The senior averaged 16.3 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks last season, and his play in the paint on both ends of the floor is what makes North Carolina so good.
Junior guard Caleb Love is also a scoring threat from anywhere on the floor and will be counted on to play a big role for coach Hubert Davis. Love had 17 points in the season-opening win after averaging 15.9 points a year ago.
