Against The Spread Pick: UConn -6½

Despite being without star sophomore center Donovan Clingan, the Huskies are 5-0 in his absence. Forward Alex Karaban has stepped up, averaging 19.3 points in the last four games while making 16 of 24 from 3-point range. The 6-foot-8 stretch four has also been forced to step into the five in a small-ball lineup. But Clingan’s return seems imminent, possibly Wednesday.

This could set up a showdown between Clingan and Bluejays center Ryan Kalkbrenner, who averages 15.9 points while bringing in 7.4 rebounds. But the 7-foot-4 Clingan shoots 63.4 percent from the floor and is a defensive presence in the paint.

Being without Clingan has put the Huskies’ depth on display. Senior Cam Spencer leads the team with 15.6 per game while shooting 46.8 percent from 3. While senior point guard Tristen Newton has cooled off in terms of scoring, he still leads the team in rebounding and assists. NBA draft lottery prospect Stephon Castle has stepped up in Big East play, reaching double figures in each of the last four games while averaging more than five rebounds and assists during that stretch.

As for Creighton, South Dakota State transfer Baylor Scheierman leads the team with 18 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Trey Alexander is the third Bluejay that averages more than 15 points.

The return of Clingan could inject life into a battle-tested Huskies lineup and will help neutralize one of the conference’s best in Kalkbrenner. Our college basketball picks today include UConn covering the 6½-point college basketball spread.
