The No. 7 Duke Blue Devils will try to avoid a second straight loss when they host the Delaware Blue Hens in a non-conference contest on Friday night. Duke is coming off its first loss of the season, falling to Kansas at the Champions Classic on Tuesday, but is unbeaten at home so far. Delaware has gone 1-1 in the 2022-23 campaign, taking its first loss on Nov. 11 on the road against Air Force. Delaware Able to Score Some Points
The Delaware Blue Hens have been putting points on the scoreboard this season, averaging 74.5 points through two games. They’ll have it a little tougher against Duke, but there is some talent in the Blue Hens’ lineup.
Junior guard Jameer Nelson Jr. leads the team in scoring with 18 points per game. The son of the former NBA star, Nelson is also grabbing five rebounds per contest through two games.
Sophomore forward Jyare Davis is scoring 17.5 points per game while also averaging 4.5 rebounds. Senior guard Ebby Asamoah is the team’s third double-digit scorer, averaging 10.5 points per contest.
For this game, a key player for the Blue Hens will be senior guard Christian Ray, a transfer from La Salle. Delaware doesn’t have a lot of height on its roster, with no one over 6-9, but Ray has been grabbing 12.0 rebounds per game and will need to do more of that to keep Duke from getting a lot of second chances at the hoop.
Duke Still Learning Its Way
The Blue Devils went through a lot of change in the offseason, including a change at head coach, with Jon Scheyer replacing Mike Krzyzewski. Scheyer has a young team for his first shot in the top job, and they’re still learning to close games, which they were unable to do against Kansas on Tuesday, falling by five.
“Before the game, we said that whoever handles the adversity better wins and I thought they did that late,” Scheyer said after Tuesday’s loss.
Not that the Blue Devils aren’t going to be very good – or are right now, considering they only lost to the defending national champions. There is talent galore on the roster, and they’ll be looking to bounce back from their first loss.
Freshman 7-foot forward Kyle Filipowski is averaging a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds. He set new career standards with 17 points and 14 rebounds in the loss to the Jayhawks.
Junior guard Jeremy Roach brings experience and is tied with Filipowski for the team scoring lead at 14.0 points per game. Roach had 16 points against Kansas but dished out just one assist after averaging 6.0 in the Blue Devils’ two wins.
