Elon Banking on 3-pointers

Through 12 games, Elon has been one of the worst teams in college basketball. In fact, the Phoenix rank 343rd in KenPom ratings out of 363 teams. Six of 10 losses have been by double digits. Elon also has an average score margin of -11.3, ranking at the bottom 12% nationally.

Of course, the Phoenix have not been a good bet. They are 3-7 ATS and have yet to win a game as an underdog. Plus, Elon is 0-5 and 2-3 ATS on the road. However, the Phoenix covered against their toughest opponent of the season, the NC State Wolfpack. Elon was a 25-point underdog and lost 74-63. NC State ranks 54th in KenPom ratings, compared to Indiana at 16.

The Phoenix must hit 3-pointers to stay close on Tuesday. The Hoosiers allow seven made 3-pointers per game, which ranks in the bottom half. Elon ranks in the 83rd percentile with 24.9 attempted 3-pointers per game. However, the efficiency has not been there, as the Phoenix shoot 25.7% from deep (358th).

Hoosiers’ Stock Plummeting

Indiana entered the season as the favorite to win the Big Ten conference, with forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, a Player of the Year candidate, leading the way. The Hoosiers had a challenging non-conference slate that included North Carolina, No. 5 Arizona, and No. 4 Kansas. Indiana has lost back-to-back games by an average margin of 18 points.

The defense struggled in the 89-75 loss to Arizona and the 84-62 loss to Kansas. Both opponents shot 49% or better from the floor and at least 40% on 3-pointers. For comparison, Indiana has held opponents to 39.7% shooting this season. Jackson-Davis’ production (16.4 points) has also taken a dip, as he is averaging 12.3 points in the last four games.

To make matters worse, Indiana’s best guard, Xavier Johnson, suffered a foot injury against Kansas on Saturday. The Hoosiers will likely be without their second-leading scorer (9.9 points) for several games.

Indiana is 1-3 ATS over the last four games, but it is 6-0 and 5-1 ATS in home games. The Hoosiers must turn it around, but they remain a contender in the Big Ten with +500 odds to win the conference.

Elon vs Indiana Picks & Prediction

Facing one of college basketball’s worst teams could not come at a better time for Indiana. The Hoosiers have failed to attack the paint in recent games, the defense has lacked, and the injury of point guard Johnson is a big loss.

Elon’s chances will hinge on 3-pointers, but this is one of the country’s most inefficient shooting teams. The Phoenix have shot a combined 11 of 51 from deep in the last two games. Elon also ranks in the bottom 13% of allowed 2-point percentage.

Indiana will dominate the paint, led by Jackson-Davis, and take their home ATS record to 6-1.
