Fade UConn ATS Versus DePaul

Following an impressive non-conference run, No. 4 UConn split its first two Big East Conference games. They now take on DePaul at home on Tuesday, a team that boasts the worst overall record in the conference. Not surprisingly, the defending national champs are heavily favored by the college basketball betting odds.

Over/Under Pick: U 139 (-110)

DePaul enters the game ranked 322nd in the nation with just 66.9 points scored per game, a recipe for a low-scoring affair. To make matters worse, the Blue Demons didn’t even manage to eclipse 50 points in their last two losses against Northwestern and Gonzaga. In those two contests, they barely shot over 30 percent from the field and less than 20 percent from three. They rebounded in a win against Chicago State, though UConn has the 38th-best scoring defense in the nation, allowing opponents just 64.2 points per game. While we don’t know if DePaul will stoop below 50 once again, we believe this alone will be enough to keep the game under 139 total points in the Las Vegas odds.

Against the Spread Pick: DePaul +24 -110

While the Huskies will surely take care of business against the Blue Demons, the question remains whether they will cover the lofty spread implemented by the college basketball betting odds makers. The biggest storyline right now is the absence of sophomore center Donovan Clingan. Prior to his injury against Seton Hall, the NBA draft prospect was averaging 13.9 points on 63.2-percent shooting, 6.3 rebounds and two blocks. Stepping into his role was junior Samson Johnson, who had a game-high 16 points against St. John’s. While Johnson is more athletic than Clingan, he lacks the same size and elite rim protection.

The Huskies will also need to knock down 3-pointers. Rutgers transfer Cam Spencer has shot 44.6 percent from beyond the arc, but they have been lacking otherwise. Alex Karaban has only knocked down 32-percent of his threes, a far cry from his stellar 42-percent output from a season ago. They will also need more consistent output from potential lottery pick Stephon Castle, who took over in the late minutes against St. John’s, though after a mostly quiet performance. If others can contribute consistently outside of Tristen Newton, who is playing at an All-American level, the Huskies could have a potentially lethal offensive attack. That said, 24 points is a lot, particularly against a conference opponent. And the Huskies failed to cover large spreads against Manhattan and New Hampshire. Despite DePaul’s lackluster offense, we believe the Blue Demons will keep it within the confines of the college basketball spread.
