Florida Unable to Rally

The Florida Gators did suffer their first loss of the season Monday night, first-ever loss to Florida Atlantic. despite almost rallying from a late 14-point deficit. Florida was down by 14 with 4:48 to play but fell by just two at home, 76-74.

FAU went on a 30-6, second-half run to erase a 10-point deficit to lead by 14.

“We were up 10 in the second half and just let them go on a run,” Florida senior forward Colin Castleton said after Monday’s loss. “We just have to come together better when it comes to holding a lead and being able to finish off a game. That’s something we did poorly tonight.”

Castleton has been playing well for much of the season, leading the Gators in scoring (25.3 points per game), rebounds (8.7) and blocks (4.0). He is hitting 52.7% of his field-goal attempts.

Sophomore Will Richard is second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game (55.6% 3-point FG).

The Gators’ offense is being run by senior guard Kyle Lofton, who is dishing out four assists per game. He’s scoring 10.0 points per game, hitting two-thirds of his 3-point attempts.

Seminoles Struggling

The Florida State Seminoles have had a rough start to the 2022-23 campaign, having dropped their first three games (Stetson, UCf, and Troy), including two at home.

Junior guard Darin Green Jr. is pacing the Seminoles in scoring, 16.3 points per game. He’s coming off a 24-point effort against Troy Monday night, 7-of-9 3-pointers.

Junior guard Cam’ron Fletcher has been the best Florida State player on the glass this season, averaging a team-high 8.3 rebounds. Fletcher is also scoring 11.7 points, though he’s shooting just 40% (three turnovers per game).

Sophomore Matthew Cleveland, ACC Sixth Man of the Year last season, was a fast starter (16 points, seven rebounds in season opener), but struggled in the last two contests. He fouled out of both (totaling eight points and four rebounds).
