Cougars Face Hawks in Veterans Classic
Cougars Try to Build on Season-Opening Win
The No. 3 Houston Cougars look for a second straight win to start the 2022-23 season when they face the Saint Joseph’s Hawks in the Veterans Classic at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md., on Friday. Houston is coming off a season-opening rout of Northern Colorado on Monday and is considered one of the top picks to make the Final Four this season. Saint Joseph’s will open its 2022-23 campaign with this game after going just 11-19 a season ago. This should be an interesting contest, so make sure you check out our in-depth preview of the game before you make your bet online.
Let’s check the latest college basketball odds, stats, injury reports, and lines for Houston vs Saint Joseph’s. We’ve got plenty of NCAA basketball odds for you to consider.

Houston Excited to Have Sasser Back on Floor
The Houston Cougars are expected to be one of the powerhouses of college basketball this season, and they have quite a schedule to face, including Friday’s game against Saint Joseph’s. One of the big reasons for the optimism this season is the return to health of guard Marcus Sasser, who missed the second half of the 2021-22 campaign with a foot injury.
”It was exciting, fun, a lot of emotions really,” Sasser said after his return to the court for Monday’s season-opening win over Northern Colorado. ”It’s been almost 11 months since I have been out there with this group of guys. Being out there with them tonight, it was real fun and exciting to see all the hard work we’ve been putting in since June pay off.”
Sasser had 21 points in the win, making four 3-pointers and showing the scoring form that has made him a preseason All-American pick. Sasser was averaging 17.7 points and shooting 43.7% from 3-point range through 12 games before his season-ending injury last year.
Forward Jarace Walker had eight points and 12 rebounds in Monday’s win, including six offensive boards. J’Wan Roberts had 12 points, six rebounds, and three steals in the win, hitting 6-of-8 from the floor.
Saint Joseph’s Looking for Better Season
The 2021-22 campaign was a disappointment for the Saint Joseph’s Hawks, as they weren’t even close to the .500 mark on the season. Coach Billy Lange is hoping for a better result this season, though it won’t be an easy start facing the opportunistic defense of the Houston Cougars in the season opener.
Lange will have to replace his top three scorers from a season ago, as Jordan Hall declared for the NBA Draft while Taylor Funk and Ejike Obinna graduated. That’s 39.4 points per game that the Hawks need to make up, so there will be plenty of shots available for the returnees.
Guard Cameron Brown averaged 8.3 points as a junior in 2021-22, but he could see that scoring average go way up this season. Brown had a game-high 22 points in the Hawks’ exhibition win over Widener on Nov. 4th, hitting five 3-pointers in the process.
Sophomore guard Erik Reynolds II had 21 points, four rebounds, and three assists in the victory. Reynolds is the only double-figure scorer (12.1 points) from a season ago returning for the Hawks.
