Houston Looking for Different Result

The Houston Cougars have two losses overall and one loss in conference play, and that came at the hands of Temple two weeks ago. Houston has been unbeaten since and could move back up to the top spot in the nation with a win on Sunday after losses by No. 1 Purdue and No. 2 Tennessee this week.

Senior guard Marcus Sasser leads the Cougars with 16.2 points per game, though he’s been off his offensive game a bit lately. Over the last four games, starting with the loss to Temple, Sasser has failed to score more than 15 points, shooting under 38% from the field in three of those contests.

Meanwhile, freshman forward Jarace Walker has been upping his offensive output, averaging 19.0 points over the last three games. Walker is averaging 11.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in his first collegiate campaign.

Junior forward J’wan Roberts is Houston’s top rebounder, grabbing 7.0 per game while scoring 9.9 points per contest. He had just eight points and five boards in the first game with Temple, struggling with foul trouble throughout before fouling out.

Temple Hoping for Repeat Performance

The Temple Owls are becoming experts at winning close games, with their last two wins coming in overtime after their one-point victory over Houston, all coming in the span of seven days. The Owls are suddenly right in the mix for the AAC title after the victories, which they’re hoping to build on on Sunday.

This was a big win for us,” Temple coach Aaron McKie said after a Jan. 28 win over UCF. “It capped off a really good week for us. That’s a team that’s going to have some say in the conference. They’re a good team. So we wanted to come here on the road and get this win and just continue to build our resume.”

Sophomore guard Khalif Battle led the way against UCF with 26 points, including nine in the overtime period. Battle is scoring 17.7 points per game and has topped 20 points in three of his last four outings, including at least 25 in the last two games.

Sophomore guard Damian Dunn is scoring 14.9 points per game, though he’s coming off an eight-point game in the win over UCF. Dunn is also averaging 3.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists and will need to help against the tough Houston defense on the perimeter.
