No. 6 Gonzaga Bidding for 26th Straight Against Lions
When the casual college basketball fan hears the name Loyola Marymount, among the first names that come to mind are coach Paul Westhead and star players Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble, who set scoring records that still stand.
That was a generation ago. Now it is Gonzaga which leads the country in both scoring (86.9 points per game) and field goal percentage (51.7)
Dameane Douglas, who was Loyola Marymount’s third-leading scorer and second-leading rebounder last season, remains sidelined due to an ankle injury.
Gonzaga is 9-0 at home this season and Loyola Marymount 2-4 on the road.
For Gonzaga, guard Joe Few and forward Kaden Perry will continue to be sidelined.
Gonzaga moved up two spots to No. 6 in both the Associated Press Top 25 poll and coaches poll.
According to the college basketball odds, Gonzaga (+500) is tied for ninth in the odds to reach the Final Four.
Gonzaga (-250) is the overwhelming favorite in the odds to win the West Coast Conference title once again. Loyola Marymount is well back at +25000.
Tough Sledding Ahead
The last two times Loyola Marymount played on the road, the Lions lost to Pacific by six points and to Saint Mary’s by 14. One can only wonder what is awaiting them in Spokane with sixth-ranked Gonzaga playing at home.
Leading scorer Cam Shelton is shooting worse from the field and on 3-pointers on the road than he is at home. He is just 11 of 26 in his last two road games, and when he played at Gonzaga last season, Shelton was 1 of 8 on field goals and finished with just five points. More will be needed from him this time around if Loyola Marymount plans on hanging around against Gonzaga.
The Las Vegas odds total has gone over in four of Loyola Marymount‘s last six games as well as in each of the last six road games.
Finding His Range
Malachi Smith was considered to be one of the top incoming transfers in the country after averaging 16.8 and 19.9 points per game at Tennessee Chattanooga in the last two seasons.
His adjustment to playing at Gonzaga has been slow at times. He scored in double figures just three times in his first 10 games and, heading into a matchup with Portland, Smith had just two field goals and seven points in his last three games.
It was a different story against Portland as he was 9 of 13 from the field, 7 of 10 on 3-pointers and made both of his foul shots on his way to a season-high 27 points off the bench. If that is a sign of what is to come, watch out for the Bulldogs.
