It’s not the matchup that many anticipated before the tournament began, but the Memphis Tigers will take on the Auburn Tigers in the championship game of the Maui Invitational on Wednesday. Memphis has advanced with upsets of No. 2 Connecticut and Michigan State, while No. 4 Auburn has wins over No. 5 Iowa State and No. 12 North Carolina.
Both Tigers are 6-0 on the season and are seeking their first Maui Invitational titles. In fact, neither team has ever been in the championship game of the tournament, though Memphis coach Penny Hardaway was co-MVP of the tournament during his playing days at the school in 1992.
Auburn is an 8½-point favorite in the game according to the college basketball lines. If you think Memphis will win the game, you can get +290 odds on the moneyline, while Auburn is -360 for a win without giving points. The over/under for the contest has been set at 155½ points.

2 Bets to Make On Memphis vs Auburn
1. Memphis Not Backing Down From Anyone
As shown by its first two games in the tournament, Memphis is not playing the role of scared underdog. The Tigers play with a lot of confidence on both ends of the floor, with their backcourt of Tyrese Hunter and PJ Haggerty fearless with their shot-making in this tournament.
Those two combined for 48 points in the first-round upset of Connecticut, then came back with 39 against Michigan State on Tuesday. They have different styles, making it difficult to stop them from filling up the hoop.
Hunter has been bombing away from 3-point range, hitting 12 from beyond the arc at a 60% clip in the Tigers’ two wins, while Haggerty makes aggressive drives to the hoop for buckets.

Auburn’s strength is in the frontcourt, led by senior forward Johni Broome, who is second in the nation in rebounding with 12.3 per game. Broome is also averaging 20.7 points after going for 23 points and 19 rebounds against North Carolina on Tuesday, his fourth straight double-double.
Tuesday’s performance was more than just on the interior, as he added five assists and three blocks while hitting a pair of 3-pointers for the second straight game.
Memphis’ big man duo of Moussa Cisse and Dain Dainja must avoid foul trouble when guarding Broome after both fouled out against the Spartans in the semifinals. Broome is going to be hard enough to contain even with a full complement of frontcourt players.
We like Auburn to come away with the title in this one, but the Memphis backcourt is going to fire away to the end, keeping this game close. When making your college basketball picks for Wednesday, take Memphis and the points.
2. Up-And-Down Contest Hits The Over
Both teams like to play solid defense in the halfcourt, but there are just too many offensive weapons for this to be a low-scoring affair. The atmosphere of a small gym in hot Hawaii often leads to teams getting out on the break a little more.
The intensity of a championship game could give both teams some nerves, but both have been playing at a high level this week, so look for a lot of great shots being made.
The total of 155½ points means team scores in the high 70s and above. That should be no problem for Auburn, which has scored at least 74 points in every game this season. Memphis has been explosive for the most part, though it only managed 71 against Michigan State and 68 against San Francisco this season.
Still, it’s hard to picture Memphis’ guards not being hot and filling up the baskets. Even third guard Colby Rogers has been scoring well this week, averaging 14.5 points in the Tigers’ two wins.
Expect a high-scoring game in the championship contest, making the over one of our top college basketball predictions for Wednesday.
