Miami vs Duke Game Preview, Odds, Picks & Predictions

Duke Looking To Send Coach K Out with One More ACC Tourney Title

Miami Looks To Take Down Duke Once Again

The top-seeded Duke men’s basketball team would like to see retiring head coach Mike Krzyzewski cut down the nets one last time at the ACC tournament while No. 4 seed Miami has other ideas as the Hurricanes can strengthen their place as an NCAA Tournament team and increase their March Madness odds.

Miami used 15 steals to win at Cameron Indoor Stadium on January 8 and is a win away from the program’s first ACC final since winning the title in 2003. Duke last won the ACC tournament in 2019.

Duke (+1100) has the fifth-best odds to win the national championship while Miami is well back at +20000.

Miami Takes Survive-and-Advance Credo to a New Level

When it comes to the 2021-22 season for Miami, the only thing predictable was the Hurricanes’ unpredictability.

Miami is 6-9 against the spread in its last 15 games as a favorite but won seven of the eight matchups as an underdog.

That tendency to play to the level of the competition nearly caught up to a Miami team that could have been considered on the bubble to be a part of the March Madness bracket with a loss in the ACC quarterfinals.

No. 13 seed Boston College had already put Wake Forest’s NCAA Tournament hopes in jeopardy with an overtime win to set up the showdown with Miami. The Eagles nearly won the game in regulation when Brevin Galloway’s prayer from just beyond half court bounced off the front of the rim.

In overtime, after Makai Ashton-Langford’s shot in the lane was no good, Jordan Miller raced up the court and beat the buzzer with a game-winning layup to give Miami the 71-69 victory.

Miami went with a seven-man rotation with Kameron McGusty (16 points), Isaiah Wong (14 points, six rebounds, six assists), and Sam Waardenburg (nine points, nine rebounds) each playing at least 40 minutes. It remains to be seen if the short turnaround will catch up with the Hurricanes. Many of the March Madness predictions have Miami in the NCAA tournament field but a win over Duke would certainly seal the deal.

Five of Miami’s last six games have gone over the Las Vegas odds total.

Are Duke Players Feeling Pressure?

Krzyzewski’s final ACC tournament almost came to a premature end.

Syracuse, playing without leading scorer Buddy Boeheim after he threw a punch in the Orange’s ACC tournament opener, led top-seeded and heavy favorite Duke led by a point with 3.5 minutes left to play. Duke responded by scoring the game’s final 10 points to advance to the semifinals with the 88-79 victory.

Wendell Moore led four Duke starters scoring in double figures with 26 points and eight rebounds while Jeremy Roach had 19 points off the bench including a key 3-pointer during the decisive game-ending stretch.

It was the fifth time in the last seven games that Roach has scored in double figures after failing to score in double figures in the previous 14 games to give the Blue Devils a scoring option off the bench.

Duke had lost the last game played at Cameron Indoor Stadium for Krzyzewski, the NCAA men’s Division I career leader in coaching wins, who announced that this will be his final season. A loss to open ACC tournament play would have been a double whammy.

“We had to learn from that game, but at the same time we had to move on,” Duke forward Mark Williams said. “We can’t be playing mind games with yourself: ‘What if this happens? What if that happens?'”

Duke will be included in the March Madness bracket regardless of what happens in the ACC Tournament but winning the conference tournament could only help give the Blue Devils as high as a No. 2 seed.

Each of Duke’s last four games went over the college basketball spreads total.

Miami Hurricanes vs Duke Blue Devils Head-to-Head

Miami has won the last two meetings against Duke including a 76-74 win on the road on January 8 as a 15-point underdog. Each of those two wins by the Hurricanes came by two points. Duke won the previous four matchups by an average of 25.3 points.

The last time the teams met in the ACC tournament was in 2010 when Duke won 77-74 in the semifinals as the 11½-point favorite. The Blue Devils. That started a stretch when Duke was favored in 16 of 17 meetings including nine matchups as double-digit favorites.

Three of the last four games in the series went over the total.

Miami Hurricanes vs Duke Blue Devils Betting Lines

Miami Hurricanes vs. Duke Blue Devils Prediction

There could be plenty of hustle plays in this one especially on the defensive end of the floor as Duke leads the ACC in blocked shots and Miami is the conference leader in steals.

Neither team is particularly deep as six Duke players were on the court for more than 10 minutes in the quarterfinals and Miami had a seven-player rotation. Neither team had to play on the opening night of the tournament but with back-to-back games, will fatigue set in?

Duke as a nine-point favorite seems a little high and a number those who bet online will jump on.
