Morehead State Looking to Newcomers
The Morehead State Eagles had a big season in 2021-22, but they also lost much of the production from that team, with only five players coming back this season. Coach Preston Spradlin does have a number of college basketball transfers coming into the program, and he’ll look to their experience to guide this team.
Senior guard Mark Freeman was a preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference first-team selection after coming to the Eagles from Illinois State in the offseason. Freeman averaged 8.8 points and 3.5 assists in his one season with the Redbirds, having played the first two seasons of his collegiate career with OVC member Tennessee State.
Senior Alex Gross joined the Eagles after four seasons at NAIA school Olivet Nazarene, earning All-American honors in his last two seasons. The 6-foot-10 big man averaged 23.8 points, 14.5 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 3.1 blocks a season ago, shooting 62% from the floor.
Fifth-year senior LJ Bryan is one of the returnees for the Eagles, and he should see an expanded role in 2022-23. The 6-9 Bryan averaged 2.9 points and 2.8 rebounds last season, shooting 64.1% from the floor.
Hopes High for Indiana
The Indiana Hoosiers used to be one of the blue bloods of college basketball, a team that would be in title contention every season. But those days haven’t been around Bloomington for a long time, though coach Mike Woodson’s squad has hopes of returning to the glory days in 2022-23.
“I’m looking to push these guys to the max, and see what happens,” Woodson said of the Hoosiers’ title hopes. “We’ve got a big task ahead of us. We’ve got to get 17 players playing at a high level. Our schedule is very competitive. You can’t run from or be scared of it. This is what college basketball is all about.”
A big reason for the raised expectations is the presence of All-American forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, who returned to the program for his fourth season with the Hoosiers. Jackson-Davis averaged 18.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks for Indiana a season ago, and he can carry the team to great heights.
Guard Xavier Johnson is another key piece to the puzzle for Woodson. The fifth-year senior averaged 12.1 points and 5.1 assists while also recording 1.2 steals last season.
Yet another senior, forward Race Thompson, brings toughness on the interior to the Hoosiers’ lineup. Thompson averaged 11.1 points and 7.5 rebounds in 2021-22, both career-best averages.
