No. 8 Marquette ATS Pick vs No. 12 Texas

The Big East-Big 12 Battle games have led to some terrific matchups, and one of those will be No. 12 Texas traveling to face No.8 Marquette. Both schools have teams worthy of being college basketball picks today, which makes this matchup so exciting.

The Longhorns won its last game, beating Texas State 77-56, getting a big 26-point performance from Max Abmas. However, the Golden Eagles lost their previous game, losing to in-state rival Wisconsin 75-64.

Underdog Texas Can Cause Problems

Texas has had a great start to the season, with only one loss through seven games. That one loss did come against a fifth-ranked UConn team that is the reigning national champion, which is understandable. However, that is also the only ranked opponent that the Longhorns have faced this season, affecting college basketball expert picks.

Facing another opponent within the top 10 of the AP Top 25 will be a big measuring stick for a team that has shown some promise but has not been sufficiently tested. Putting up a fight against Marquette could show college basketball lines that Texas is a legit team and not just capable of beating lesser programs.

One of the key players on the current roster is Abmas, the senior transfer from Oral Roberts. He has settled into his new team, averaging 16.7 points and four assists. In the win over Texas State, Abmas had his biggest game of the season, scoring 26 points, hitting five threes and dishing out six assists.

Abmas’s great scoring game was helped by Texas’ two primary bigs having double-doubles. Kadin Shedrick and Dillon Mitchell each had 11 points and 11 rebounds while combining for seven blocks in the last game. These three players will need to have big nights to put some pressure on Marquette.

Marquette Needs to Bounce Back

During parts of the season, Marquette has been one of the highest-ranked teams in the nation, having only recently dropped out of the top five in the last poll because of the loss to Wisconsin. That does put college basketball spreads into a bind with the Golden Eagles, who already have two losses.

On top of that, both of the losses occurred within the previous three games. Marquette lost 78-75 to Purdue, which did not change much in college basketball odds because it was a close matchup of two of the top teams in the nation. Then the Golden Eagles dominated Southern, 93-56, before losing to Wisconsin.

The loss to Wisconsin showed some potential issues for Marquette, which lost the rebounding battle with Wisconsin 38-23 and did not shoot the ball well from 3-point range (24.1% on 29 attempts). That seems like the way the underdogs have a chance against the Golden Eagles.

However, this should be a bounce-back game for the Golden Eagles’ two main guards. Texas does not have the perimeter defense to contend with Kam Jones and Tyler Kolek, who average 29.9 points and 7.7 assists per game, with both shooting over 42% from behind the arc.

Texas vs Marquette Best Bet

While this is a game that, theoretically, Texas should make close for college basketball picks, we know more about Marquette, making it easier to back the Golden Eagles. After a tough loss to Wisconsin, Marquette will be ready to get back into the win column against a Texas team that does not match up extremely well and has not been truly tested.
