It is crunch time for the North Carolina Tar Heels as they head south for an ACC clash against the Florida State Seminoles. Both teams rank among the biggest disappointments in the conference, but UNC still has a chance to make the NCAA Tournament. Until now, UNC has been a massive disappointment at 18-11 and ranking seventh in the ACC. With two games left, the Tar Heels trail Pitt by four games for the conference lead and have to win out just to finish .500 in ACC play.
Things are looking up for the Tar Heels, who won back-to-back games against Notre Dame and No. 6 Virginia last week. However, that brought their recent record to a weak 3-5 straight-up (SU) since the start of February. UNC also has an overall losing record against conference opponents.
UNC’s issues extend past their win/loss record, and the Tar Heels have an awful ATS record. At 9-20 against the spread, betting on UNC has been a losing battle with an ROI of -40.85. With over 350 teams in the nation, UNC has the 8th eighth-worst return on investment, and bettors are down -13.05 units this season.
Florida State Fresh Off Upset Win
The Florida State Seminoles snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday with an unlikely 85-84 victory over the No. 13 Miami Hurricanes in South Beach. It was just their second win since the end of January and their first against a ranked team all season. The win won’t do anything to get FSU into the Big Dance, and the Seminoles will need to win the ACC Tournament somehow to earn a berth. Don’t hold your breath, FSU fans.
The win over Miami is a positive sign, but we can’t ignore that the Seminoles are an objectively lousy team with a string of bad losses leading up to Saturday’s win. They may not have the worst record in the ACC but, at 9-20, they are the most disappointing.
The Seminoles are also a terrible bet considering their 1-6 record against the spread since the beginning of February. Saturday was the only game FSU covered in almost a month, and that does not inspire confidence.
