North Florida Coming Off Tough Loss

The North Florida Ospreys have had a rough start to the 2022-23 campaign, dropping three of their first four, including a one-point loss to Duquesne on Monday that was decided on a jumper with just one second to play. The Ospreys have struggled on the defensive end of the floor, giving up 82 points per game, including 87.3 points in their three losses.

Senior guard Jarius Hicklen has been the top offensive performer for North Florida, averaging a team-high 15.3 points. He had a season-high 24 points against Duquesne, though he dished out just one assist after recording 13 in the team’s first three games.

Senior guard Jose Placer is coming off 11 points, five rebounds and six assists in the loss to Duquesne, but he also committed seven turnovers, something he must improve upon against an opportunistic Kentucky defense. Placer is averaging 12.0 points despite shooting just 40% from the floor.

Senior forward Carter Hendricksen is the Ospreys’ top rebounder, grabbing 6.3 per game, but he’ll need to be even more of a presence on the glass against the Wildcats. Hendricksen is also scoring 14.5 points per game after going for 14 in Monday’s loss.

Kentucky Getting Healthy

The Kentucky Wildcats have played an interesting schedule so far, especially with some of the team’s best players dealing with injuries to start the season. But with a full complement of players, the Wildcats came up short on the road against Gonzaga on Sunday, dropping their second game in three outings.

The game was Kentucky’s third in six days, which included a double-overtime loss to Michigan State on Nov. 15, but coach John Calipari was still unhappy with his team’s play in the first half after a trip to the West Coast.

We can’t miss every open shot,” Calipari said after Sunday’s loss. “In the first half, it was so embarrassing we couldn’t run a play.

The Wildcats will be playing at home on Wednesday, where they are 3-0 this season. They’ll also have the best player on the floor in All-American center Oscar Tshiebwe, who is averaging 16.0 points and 13.3 rebounds in three games.

Senior guard Antonio Reeves is averaging 13.2 points, having come to the Wildcats as a transfer from Illinois State in the offseason. Senior guard Sahvir Wheeler is tied for second in the country in assists per game, dishing out 8.3 while also scoring 10.0 points per game.
