Northwestern Wins Despite Offensive Struggles
The Northwestern Wildcats’ offense went cold from the field on Wednesday against Illinois, falling to make a field goal over the final 5:53 of the contest. But the Wildcats connected on 13-of-16 from the free-throw line down the stretch to hold off the Illini and earn a 73-60 victory.
Guard Chase Audige had 21 points and four steals to lead the Northwestern effort in the win. The senior is scoring 15.8 points per game to lead the Wildcats while also contributing 3.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.6 steals, which ranks 10th in the country.
Guard Boo Buie is the only other player on the team averaging in double figures in scoring, adding 13.9 points per game. Buie is leading the team with 4.2 assists per contest and is coming off 15 points and four assists against the Illini, hitting 11-of-12 from the free-throw line.
Center Matthew Nicholson provides size in the paint for the Wildcats. The 7-foot junior is averaging 6.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks while shooting 51.6% from the floor.
Indiana Struggling To Stay Healthy
A loss to Iowa was bad enough for the Indiana Hoosiers on Thursday night, but the team also suffered the loss of forward Race Thompson, who suffered a leg injury. Indiana is already missing guard Xavier Johnson and now must deal with another personnel loss.
‘It’s tough because I thought he got his legs taken from under him, no call,” Indiana coach Mike Woodson said after Thursday’s loss. “It’s just … that’s a bad play man, it really is.”
Thompson is out indefinitely with the injury, while Johnson has been out with a foot injury since mid-December. That’s a loss of a combined 18.3 points, 9.4 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game.
That will put more pressure on forward Trayce Jackson-Davis to carry the Hoosiers. The senior All-American is tops on the Hoosiers in scoring (17.6 points), rebounding (8.3) and blocks (2.7), shooting 62% from the floor.
