Ohio State Working on Full-Game Effort
A home game against Alabama A&M should have been an easy win from the get-go for the Ohio State Buckeyes, but on Thursday, the team struggled to put away the Bulldogs in the first 20 minutes. But, after leading by just three at halftime, the Buckeyes turned it on in the second half to end up winning by 31 points.
“It took a different energy,” Ohio State guard Tanner Holden said after Thursday’s win. “That was the biggest thing. Our energy was low in the first half on both sides of the ball. I think we came out with a different energy. Defensively, we started getting stops, getting rebounds, and gang rebounding. Offensively, we started moving the ball a little better.”
Freshman forward Brice Sensabaugh had a team-high 21 points in the win, adding six rebounds. The first-year player has been the team’s top offensive performer all season long, averaging a team-best 15.8 points and shooting 52.7% from the floor.
Senior forward Justice Sueing is contributing 13.6 points and 4.9 rebounds to a balanced Buckeyes attack. Ohio State has five different players averaging at least 9.5 points this season, as the team averages 81.8 points per game, tops in the Big Ten.
Northwestern Quietly Keeps Winning
The Big Ten Conference has a lot of depth, and part of that is the strength of the Northwestern Wildcats, who have two losses (Auburn, Pittsburgh). Granted, the team’s schedule hasn’t been as stacked as some of the other conference schools, but the Wildcats are coming into the conference slate with a lot of confidence.
Senior guard Chase Audige has been playing well, averaging 23.6 points over the last three games. He’s averaging 15.3 points on the season, though his biggest impact may be at the defensive end, where he’s recording 2.6 steals per contest, good for 13th in the country.
Senior guard Boo Buie can get hot and take over a game when he gets going. He’s the only other double-figure scorer for coach Chris Collins, averaging 14.2 points and a team-high 4.3 assists per contest while shooting 37.5% from 3-point range.
Senior forward Robbie Beran will need to have a big game for the Wildcats against Ohio State, as he leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per contest. Beran is also scoring 9.8 points a game, but he can struggle with foul trouble at times.
