No.1 Purdue just suffered its first loss of the season and will be immediately tested again by Iowa, but the Boilermakers have the luxury of being at home. While Purdue is still one of the nation’s top teams, Iowa now knows the Boilermakers are vulnerable, making NCAAB lines potentially shift.
The Hawkeyes faced North Florida, finishing with a dominant 103-78 win, even though the game had signs of being close in the first half. In the Boilermakers’ last game and their Big Ten opener, Northwestern forced them into overtime before winning 92-88. It marked the second straight season that the Boilermakers lost to Northwestern.
Iowa Can Score
There has been a clear blueprint to beating reigning National Player of the Year Zach Edey and Purdue. Go toe-to-toe with the Boilermakers offensively while making a lot of 3-pointers and taking advantage of the space on the floor. Now the question is, does Iowa have the ability to do those things, potentially making it an exciting option for NCAAB picks today.
One plus for the Hawkeyes is they are the highest-scoring team in the Big Ten. They average 90.7 points per game, 6.1 more than Purdue, which ranks in second. However, this is the Big Ten opener for Iowa. The Hawkeyes have had an easier start, with their two losses coming against their toughest opponents, Creighton and Oklahoma.
Still, even in the 92-84 loss to Creighton on Nov. 14, Iowa’s offense still made an impact. A big reason for that is having four players averaging 12 points or more per game. That is headlined by Ben Krikke, who averages 18.7 points. The top shooter is Payton Sandfort, shooting 32.6% on a team-high 46 attempts, and he will play a crucial role against Purdue.
On top of that, what else could make college basketball odds intriguing for this game is that the Hawkeyes are coming off a solid offensive performance. They scored 103 points against North Florida, going 8 of 14 from three.
Purdue to Keep Leaning on Edey
Despite the loss to Northwestern, college basketball lines on Purdue likely won’t change too much. This is a much better and more balanced team than the one that was a No.1 seed, losing to a No.16 seed (Fairleigh Dickinson) in the first round of March Madness last season.
While that is true, it does not mean the Boilermakers have solved all their potential issues. Comparatively, they are a much better 3-point shooting team to open up space for Edey to operate in the paint, and the team isn’t struggling at the charity stripe. Those issues plagued the team last season, but they have taken steps toward improvement.
That improvement did not save Purdue from losing to Northwestern for the second straight season. Purdue outrebounded Northwestern 52-27 while also making 11 more free throws (31-20). However, Northwestern did go 10 of 20 from the 3-point line while Purdue went 5 of 19, becoming the biggest reason for the loss.
The good thing is that the 7-foot-4 Edey still had an impressive game, finishing with 35 points, 14 rebounds while adding in three blocks and hitting 15 free throws. It would be wise for college basketball predictions to believe he will have another big game against Iowa. For one, Iowa lacks the interior presence to match up against Edey. Furthermore, like all of Purdue’s roster, Edey will be very motivated to put the loss to Northwestern behind them by beating Iowa.

That does open the door to this game potentially hitting the over. Both teams can put up points, which seems to be this matchup’s trajectory.

Questions Of The Day
Can Purdue cover the spread against Iowa?
Purdue should be very motivated to beat Iowa, which could make it an option to cover the spread. However, Iowa does have an offense to make things interesting, making the over a potentially better betting option.
Will Zach Edey score more than 21 points against Iowa?
Iowa does not have a defensive presence to handle Zach Edey, which few teams do, but that could lead to a big game for Purdue’s starting center.
