No. 1 Purdue Looks To Stay on Top

Boilermakers Eye Season Sweep

The Purdue Boilermakers will look to remain atop the Big Ten standings when they play host to the Penn State Nittany Lions on Wednesday.

Purdue was this season’s first unanimous AP No. 1 team, earning the ranking after winning its eighth game in a row. The Boilermakers look like they’re going to run away with the conference title, as they are 10-1 in the conference and three games ahead of second-place Northwestern.

Penn State, meanwhile, is one of four Big Ten teams tied for seventh place with a 5-5 conference record.

The Boilermakers already defeated Penn State on the road at the beginning of the year and will now go for the season sweep on their home court.

According to college basketball odds, Purdue (+1000) is tied for the second-best odds to win the national title. The Boilermakers (-2000) have the best odds to win the Big Ten while the Nittany Lions (+25000) are tied for eighth.

Let’s check the latest college basketball news, stats, injury reports, and college basketball lines for Penn State vs Purdue. We’ve got plenty of NCAA basketball picks for you to consider.

Penn State Looks for Win on the Road

The Lions have won two of their last three, but both recent wins came at home. They have struggled to win on the road.

Penn State is 1-4 on the road and 2-2 in neutral-site games this season. The Lions’ only road win came in early December when they defeated Illinois, 74-59.

The Lions are one of the best shooting teams in the Big Ten. Though they rank sixth in points a game, the Nittany Lions are third in shooting percentage and first in 3-point percentage. Penn State averages 73.6 points a game on 46.4% shooting and 38.5% from beyond the arc.

However, Penn State’s strong shooting hasn’t traveled. The Lions are averaging 68.4 points on 42.8% field-goal shooting while shooting 33.6% from 3 when on the road. Penn State shot 50% from both the field and the 3-point line in its lone road win.

In the Lions’ most recent loss, Penn State failed to hit the 50-point mark, falling to Rutgers 65-45. The Lions finished shooting 33.3% from the field and 4-of-26 from 3.

With Penn State’s defense allowing 66.6 points a game and averaging in the middle of the Big Ten, the Lions will need an offensive performance like the Illinois game to be able to compete with Purdue.

Purdue Continues Its Dominance

The Boilermakers have continued to win behind the domination of Zach Edey.

Edey, the favorite for the National Player of the Year, led Purdue to a 16-point win over Michigan State after helping the Boilermakers clinch a five-point win over Michigan earlier in the week. He scored 38 points and grabbed 13 boards against the Spartans and recorded 19 and 9 respectively against the Wolverines.

Edey leads the team and conference in points and rebounds, averaging a double-double with 22.1 points and 13 rebounds a game. The 7-footer also leads the Big Ten in field-goal percentage, shooting at a 61.2% clip.

Although Edey is the main player that opponents game plan for in an offense that ranks fifth in points and fourth in field-goal percentage, averaging 73.8 points on 45.9% shooting, Fletcher Loyer also averages double figures. Loyer averages 12.8 points a game and had a big game against Michigan, scoring 17.

Purdue’s defense has also been strong, as its 60.3 points allowed per game is second in the conference while the Boilermakers’ +13.4 point differential is first.

Penn State was unable to find an answer for Edey the first time around, as he scored 30 points while pulling down 13 boards and recording three blocks as well. As long as he is in the lineup, the Boilermakers will have a good shot at success.

Edey and the Purdue offense are on fire while the Nittany Lions haven’t been able to find much rhythm on the road. If history is any indication, Purdue has a solid chance at winning by double digits for the second time over Penn State.
