Boilermakers Undefeated Away From Home
This Martin Luther King Jr. Day matchup lost a little bit of its shine when Michigan State’s seven-game winning streak came to an end with a loss to Illinois. Still, this is a showdown between teams who figure to have a say on who will win the Big Ten title this season.
Things could get a little physical inside. Purdue leads the Big Ten in rebounding offense, defense and margin as the Boilermakers pull down 12.2 more rebounds than their opponents. Michigan State is third in the Big Ten in rebounding margin.
Malik Hall is questionable with a leg injury for Michigan State. He had 20 points in an early-season win over Kentucky before missing more than a month of action. Michigan State is 4-1 since he returned to the court.
Purdue was No. 1 in both national polls for four weeks in a row before a loss to Rutgers. The Boilermakers enter the week ranked third. Michigan State might have had a chance to break into the top 25 if not for a loss to Illinois the last time out.
According to the college basketball odds, Purdue (+1000) has the second-best odds to win the national title. Michigan State (+8000) is tied for 29th.

Freshmen Heating Up
Freshmen Fletcher Loyer and Braden Smith have played huge roles in Purdue moving to the top of the national polls after an impressive start to the season.
However, both guards struggled against Rutgers as the Boilermakers suffered their only loss of the season. They were a combined 3 of 9 from the field with five turnovers.
The rough outing did not shake the confidence of either player.
Loyer is 18 for 38 from the field (13 of 25 on 3-pointers) as he has averaged 17.3 points per game. He is coming off his third 20-point game of the season as he had a career-high 27 points in a win over Nebraska the last time out.

Smith is averaging 13.7 points on 15-of-26 shooting (7 of 14 from 3-point range) to go with five rebounds and 5.7 assists per game during that stretch.
When they are connecting from the perimeter, it becomes even harder to deal with the Boilermakers’ national player of the year front-runner, Zach Edey.
Purdue has covered against the Las Vegas odds in just three of its last 11 games.
Trying to Find the Range
Michigan State is fourth in the Big Ten in 3-point shooting percentage. However, it would be hard to convince anybody who watched the Spartans play Illinois of that fact.
Michigan State missed all seven of its 3-point attempts and was outscored 18-0 at the 3-point line in the 75-66 loss at Illinois.
The Spartans were coming off a game against Wisconsin when they shot a season-high 53.8% from distance.
Purdue is allowing opponents to shoot just 30% on 3-pointers so this might not be the best matchup to rediscover the shooting touch from the perimeter. Michigan State shot 39.6% on 3-pointers during its recent seven-game winning streak and will look to approach that number once again.
