Ride Oregon to Cover Spread vs USC

The 2023 season has not gone according to plan for USC. After starting in the Top 25 of the college basketball rankings, the Trojans sit just one game over .500 and have lost three of their last four. They now face the tall task in their Pac-12 opener when they travel to Oregon, where the college basketball spreads tab them as 2½-point underdogs.

Moneyline Pick: Oregon -110

What happened to USC? The Trojans entered the season with lots of hype with consensus top recruit Isaiah Collier joined the likes of senior Boogie Ellis and junior wing Kobe Johnson. They have dealt with injuries, with Collier being the only player to start all 11 games. But Ellis, who left the contest against Alabama State with a bruised hip, appears good to go, which will surely make an impact when making your college basketball picks. He averages 19 points despite scoring just two against Alabama State. Collier averages 16 points, though he has turned the ball over nearly as many times as he’s assisted his teammates. Bronny James, son of LeBron James, is being eased into action following a cardiac arrest in the offseason. James averages just 16 minutes and five points in three games.

Although favored in the college basketball odds, the Ducks have perhaps been ravaged even worse by injuries, losing guard Jesse Zarzuela and center Nate Bittle for the season, as well as big man N’Faly Dante indefinitely, forcing others to step up. Senior guard Jermaine Couisnard is coming off his first career double-double while dropping a career-high 27 points. Freshman guard Jackson Shelstad has been a strong contributor, reaching double figures in six of his seven contests. Freshman and NBA draft prospect Kwame Evans Jr. has settled in offensively, including a career-high 17 points against Syracuse, but now goes up against Trojans defensive ace Joshua Morgan, who is fifth-best in the nation with 2.73 blocks per contest.

Against the Spread Pick: Oregon -2½

A common trend in USC’s losses is both sides of the 3-point line. Gonzaga shot a staggering 54 percent from deep while Auburn knocked down 38 percent of its tries. Meanwhile, in losses to Long Beach State and UC Irvine, the Trojans failed to eclipse 23 percent from downtown. While not being a defensive juggernaut, Oregon is still feeling the high from a couple strong performances where the Ducks limited UTEP and California Baptist to 55 points or less.

We believe the Trojans will continue their struggles into Pac-12 play, allowing the Ducks to cover the 2½-point college basketball line.
