Saint Mary's Looks To Sweep Gonzaga

March Madness Seedings Implications Abound

Games don’t come much bigger than this in the WCC. Saint Mary’s has already clinched a share of the conference title and can win it outright by toppling Gonzaga.

Both teams are jockeying for position among the top 16 seeds in the March Madness bracket so there is more than just conference bragging rights on the line.

Gonzaga has won five straight games since a loss to Saint Mary’s and is averaging 98 points in those contests. Two of the last three games played by Saint Mary’s have been decided by six points or less.

Keep an eye on the status of Gonzaga’s Efton Reid. He has missed the last two games as a result of a lower-body injury. Reid played 12 and 11 minutes in the first two games of the season. However, his role has diminished. If the fouls do pile up in this game, having a 7-footer to bring in off the bench would be beneficial.

Gonzaga moved up one spot to No. 12 in The Associated Press Top 25 poll and remained 12th in the coaches’ poll. Saint Mary’s went from 17th to 14th in the coaches’ poll and from 17th to 15th in the AP rankings.

According to the college basketball odds, Gonzaga (+2500) is 11th in the odds to win the national championship. Saint Mary’s (+3300) is tied for 13th.

Saint Mary’s is seventh and Gonzaga is 10th in the latest NCAA NET rankings as this is a huge game for both when it comes to having the best seed in the upcoming March Madness bracket.

Let’s check the latest college basketball news, stats, injury reports, and college basketball lines for Saint Mary’s vs Gonzaga. We’ve got plenty of NCAA basketball picks for you to consider.

Saving His Best for Last

It has been an interesting last five games for Saint Mary’s senior guard Logan Johnson. After posting back-to-back 30-point games, including one in the loss to Loyola Marymount, Johnson missed all three of his shots and was held scoreless in a three-point win over San Diego.

That rare off game did little to shake Johnson’s confidence. He is averaging 28 points while shooting 71% from the field in wins over Brigham Young and  Pacific.

Johnson had a pretty quiet game the first time the Gaels played Gonzaga with 12 points, two rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes before fouling out. It was the first time he fouled out since a win over San Francisco last season.

The college basketball betting lines total has gone over in four of the last six games played by Saint Mary’s.

Gonzaga on a Roll

Gonzaga has been the top scoring team in the country for much of the season. However, the Bulldogs have picked things up over the last three games.

The Bulldogs are shooting 57% while beating Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine and San Diego while putting up 108, 97, and 97 points.

Many of the usual suspects have been leading the way with Julian Strawther is scoring 24.3 points with 12 3-pointers over the last three games. Drew Timme averaged 23.7 points in those three wins.

Time averaged 20 points in the conference games lost by the Bulldogs. However, Strawther had a total of 16 points on 5 of 19 shooting in those two contests.

The Las Vegas odds total has gone over in each of Gonzaga’s last six games and in seven of the last eight contests against WCC teams.

Saint Mary’s vs Gonzaga Head-to-Head

Saint Mary’s has won two of the last three meetings. However, the last time the Gaels won in Spokane came in 2016.

Twelve straight games between the teams were decided by double digits before the Gaels won 78-70 in overtime on Feb. 4.

This is likely not to be the final meeting since the teams have squared off in each of the last seven WCC tournaments.

Saint Mary’s vs Gonzaga Picks and Prediction

When the teams met the first time, it was defense getting the upper hand against the offense when the Gaels, the top defensive team in the WCC, had the top-scoring offensive squad in the conference and the country out of its comfort zone.

Gonzaga led by as many as 11 points and held an eight-point lead with 7½ minutes to play. Freshman Aidan Mahaney had 13 points of the Gaels’ final 20 points in the second half and he assisted on the game-tying layup by Mitchell Saxen.

Saint Mary’s leads the WCC in rebounding margin and that came into play in the first meeting with the Gaels outrebounding Gonzaga 37-29 and had nine of the 11 offensive rebounds.

While the Gaels have had some close calls recently, the 5½-point spread seems like they are being undervalued just a bit.

The Bulldogs are 22-3 when listed by the sportsbook as the favorite. This is just the third time that Saint Mary’s has been listed as the underdog with the Gaels splitting those games.

Gonzaga is 8-5 against the spread (ATS) at home while Saint Mary’s has covered in just three of its seven road games.

Saint Mary’s is listed at +210 in our Las Vegas college basketball lines. This means that if you wager $100 on the Gaels, you have a chance to win $210. Gonzaga is -260, offering a chance to win $38on a $100 wager.

The implied probability attached to the betting lines gives Saint Mary’s a 32.26% chance to win, with Gonzaga at 72.22%.
