Seton Hall-Rutgers: Pirates Good Bet To Take Garden State Showdown

Next season might be different, but Seton Hall should probably be among your NCAA picks today as they play host to struggling Rutgers in the Garden State Hardwood Classic.

The Pirates have lost three of four, but are 5-0 at home and should be primed to win their third straight and 8th in 10 against Rutgers on Saturday. Seton Hall started the season with four straight wins at home against second-level Division I teams.

USC (71-63) and Iowa (85-72) both handled the Pirates at the Rady Children’s Invitational in San Diego and Seton Hall dropped a 78-60 decision to sixth-ranked Baylor on Tuesday.

Rutgers also won four in a row – after a setback against Princeton on opening night — but lost its last two outings. The Scarlet Knights fell 76-58 at home against Illinois in their Big Ten opener before losing 76-57 at Wake Forest on Wednesday.

Seton Hall was picked 9th of 11 teams in the Big East coaches’ poll and Rutgers 10th out of 13 in the Big Ten media poll among preseason NCAA basketball predictions.

Under Bettors Cashing on Rutgers

The Scarlet Knights are averaging 67.3 points and shooting 40.4% from the field, helping under bettors win seven of their first eight games.

Leading scorer Aundre Hyatt is scoring only 11.8 per game and made just 9-of-30 from the field the last three contests while center Clifford Omoruyi is next at 10.1 – along with a team-best 8.5 rebounds. Omoruyi is third in the nation in blocks per game (3.4).

Rutgers has been decent defensively, allowing 37.3% shooting and 60.6 points. But the Knights were pounded on the boards in their last two games if you bet online. It should help that senior forward Mawot Mag (knee) is expected to make his season debut, though.

The program has probably had better days off the court this fall, receiving commitments from a pair of five-star recruits. Ace Bailey from Georgia was joined by New Jersey’s Dylan Harper this week. Bailey is ranked third in the class and Harper second by ESPN.

The excitement of those two signings may boost the Scarlet Knights on Saturday, but they must shoot better.

Hall’s Scoring Depth Key For Bettors

The advantage Seton Hall may have, other than the home court, is it owns more options on the offensive end.

Kadary Richmond leads the way at 15.1 points per game and contributed 39 total in the last two contests for the Pirates. Dre Davis (12.9), Al-Amir Dawes (12.1) and Jaden Bediako (10.5, 65.5 percent FG shooting, 7.3 rebounds) also contribute.

Seton Hall made a run in the second half against Baylor to pull within three points, but allowed 51% shooting overall – 53.3 in the first half.

They came out and took control of the game early and we were fighting an uphill battle the rest of the game,” Pirates coach Shaheen Holloway told reporters. “. … Can’t play in spurts against good teams.

Seton Hall has not been a great bet this season, going 3-5 ATS according to NCAA basketball lines — 0-4 in the last four games. The over/under is 4-4 this season for the Pirates, who average 75.8 points.

Rutgers vs Seton Hall Head-to-Head

Seton Hall edged host Rutgers 45-43 last season as the Scarlet Knights connected on 2-of-13 from the field over the last nine minutes.

Davis led the Pirates with 10 points and Hyatt topped Rutgers with nine as both teams shot lower than 35 percent from the field.

Seton Hall also won 77-63 in 2021 for its fourth straight win at home.

The under is 6-1 at the sportsbook in the last seven meetings.

Rutgers vs Seton Hall Betting Lines

Rutgers vs Seton Hall Best Bets

There will be a lot of emotion in the New Jersey battle with a sold-out arena for the eighth straight meeting. The battle inside between Omoruyi and Bediako will be interesting, but the Pirates may have more production outside the lane. Richmond is coming off two big games and Dawes had 25 points in the win over Northeastern on Nov. 29. Expect Seton Hall to put together enough runs to hold off Rutgers.

Questions Of the Day

Which Rutgers player will have the biggest impact on the game?

Senior guard Noah Fernandes could be the key if the Knights earn a victory. Fernandes is averaging 11.4 points the last five games after a slow start.

Will Seton Hall’s offense maintain its momentum against Rutgers?

The Knights play decent defense, but the Pirates will continue to put up points if they can top their average of 13.8 assists per game – 155th in the nation.
