Target Under for Minnesota vs Indiana

One of the toughest games on the slate Friday night for fans, handicappers and even those making NCAAB expert picks is likely to be the Minnesota Golden Gophers (12-3) vs Indiana Hoosiers (11-5). Indiana currently sits around a -4½-point favorite ahead of an intriguing early-season Big Ten matchup whichthat will be played at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Tip is set for 6:30 p.m. ET and the current over/under on this game is 145.

Although Indiana gets the nod as the favorite in this game, from a betting perspective, you’d be hard-pressed to find a team that’s been as dominant as Minnesota when evaluating NCAA basketball lines. The Golden Gophers are a staggering 14-1 against the spread (ATS), making this road matchup with Indiana even more interesting.

A few key betting trends are playing a major role in the pick targeting the under here, along with the decision to lay the points with the Hoosiers on their home floor, so we broke it down below.

Minnesota vs Indiana Odds and Spread

  • Minnesota is 14-1 ATS this season
  • Minnesota is 5-0 ATS in its last five games
  • The over is 1-3 for Minnesota in games when they’re an underdog
  • The over is 3-2 in Minnesota’s last five games
  • The over is 3-2 in Indiana’s last five games
  • Indiana is 3-2 ATS in its last five games
  • Indiana has won six straight games against Minnesota
  • Indiana has covered in five of the last six games against Minnesota, with the exception being their last matchup

Over/Under Pick: Under 145 for Minnesota vs Indiana

While the over has been a decent play for both teams in the past five games, two key aspects here for Minnesota help to point this to the under. Not only is the over 1-3 when the Golden Gophers are on the road, but they’ve also failed to hit the average points per game (78.9) in any game played away from home. This includes scoring 71 points against Michigan, 74 against Ohio State and just 58 in a loss to San Francisco.

While Indiana has allowed 73.2 points per game, the Hoosiers have given up 66 and 65 the past two games and Minnesota is stout defensively, allowing only 66.3 points per. I like the under on the total of 1475 here.

ATS Pick: Indiana -4½ vs Minnesota

Minnesota hasn’t spent much time on the road this season, and while the Golden Gophers flashed legitimate upside this season, the same can be said about Indiana when playing at home. The Hoosiers nearly pulled off the upset at home against one of the top teams in the nation in Kansas, falling 75-71, and most recently defeated Ohio State, a team that took down Minnesota by 10.

I think we see Indiana’s home-court advantage come into play here and it gets the job done while continuing the trend we’ve seen in the past two games. The Hoosiers have allowed just 66 and 65 points in that two-game span, as opposed to 86 and 87 the two games prior, making this an interesting college basketball betting line for Friday night.

Laying 4½ to a solid opponent like Minnesota isn’t ideal, but while I do think they cover the spread, the moneyline checks in at -195 for the Hoosiers. It’s not terrible and although I’d prefer to move the line or buy a point when possible, I’d also listen to an argument to simply grab the Indiana moneyline here.
