There’s a logjam atop the SEC standings early in the conference campaign, but this weekend should help loosen things up a bit. One of the four teams tied for third place in the league, the No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers, will look for a third straight win when they visit the Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday.

Tennessee is currently 3-1 in league play, tied with Alabama, Kentucky and Missouri for third, one game behind both Auburn and Ole Miss. Vanderbilt would like to move into that mix in the top half of the league standings, but comes into this one having split its four SEC contests, putting it in a five-way tie for seventh place.

This series has been dominated by the Volunteers over the last few years, but the Commodores are hoping to change that on Saturday. Check out our best college basketball picks to help you make your wagers before tipoff.

3 Tennessee vs Vanderbilt Bets You Should Be Making

1. Tennessee (-5)

The records of these teams may be close to each other, but the Volunteers are definitely the better team, sitting near the top of the national rankings for much of the season. An ugly 30-point loss to Florida a couple weeks ago showed Tennessee that it can’t look past anyone, and that’s bad news for the Commodores in this one.

Coach Rick Barnes’ squad has multiple options on offense, and on Tuesday night, it was senior guard Jordan Gainey’s turn to take the lead, as he had 19 points and seven rebounds in an 18-point win at Georgia. He was the third different player in the last three games to lead the Volunteers in scoring.

Gainey’s backcourt mate, Zakai Zeigler, was just as impactful, finishing with 16 points, seven assists and six steals in the victory. Zeigler is fifth in the country in assists per game with 7.5.

Vanderbilt must get a clean game from point guard AJ Hoggard. The senior transfer from Michigan State is averaging 2.3 turnovers per game and has 11 over the last three contests. When he’s good, Hoggard can score and dish the ball with the best point guards in the country, but if he can’t avoid turnovers against the Tennessee defense, it will be trouble for the Commodores.

We like the Tennessee guards more than the Vanderbilt backcourt, which is one of the reasons the first of our college basketball picks on this game is for the Volunteers to win and cover on the road.

2. Tennessee vs Vanderbilt Over 140.5

Tennessee has a potent offense, but it’s Vanderbilt that averages more points per game, scoring 82.4 per contest. Per the Tennessee vs Vanderbilt stats , that average has gone down a bit in conference play, with the Commodores scoring just 69.0 points per game.

Still, to avoid the Volunteers’ halfcourt defense, the Commodores need to push the tempo, which is where Hoggard is going to come in. He is capable of scoring, leading Vanderbilt in points in three of its four conference contests, but he also can get his teammates quality shots as well.

One of those players is Jason Edwards, who paces Vanderbilt with 17.0 points per game. The junior guard has bounced back from a thigh injury that slowed him early in conference play, scoring 20 and 13 in the last two games. He’ll need to be at his best against the Volunteers.

Both of these teams can be dangerous in transition, and we like this game to be an up-and-down affair. Make sure you bet online on the over hitting in this contest.

Bet On Tennessee vs Vanderbilt Over 140.5

3. Vanderbilt F Devin McGlockton Over 7.5 Rebounds

Though he’s a bit undersized at 6-foot-7, Devin McGlockton is sixth in the SEC in rebounding this season at 8.2 per game. The junior forward is going to have to be active on the glass in this one as well, with Tennessee very good at crashing the boards for offensive putbacks.

McGlockton has snagged double-digit boards in six contests this season, including three of his last five games. There are going to be missed shots on both ends of the floor, and the Commodores need their top board man to play big against the Volunteers.

If he can hit the offensive glass and use his 65.3% field-goal shooting, that would be a big plus for Vanderbilt’s upset hopes. McGlockton is the third-leading scorer for Vanderbilt this season at 10.9 points per game.

Even in a loss, McGlockton should show enough effort to go over on his rebound total, so make sure one of your college basketball predictions for this contest is for that prop.

Bet on Devin McGlockton Over 7.5 Rebounds (-127)
