Jayhawks Looking to Rebound

Following their first loss of the season against Tennessee (64-50), the Kansas Jayhawks play host to the Texas Southern Tigers. Kansas (6-1) is hoping to find answers on the offensive end, while Texas Southern (1-6) looks to snap a four-game losing streak.

Both teams have struggled against the spread (ATS), with the Jayhawks at 1-6 while the Tigers are 1-3 over their last four games.

Texas Southern Offense Slumping

Texas Southern caps a four-game road trip with its toughest challenge yet against Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse. The Tigers are 0-5 and 2-3 ATS in road games. During the road trip, Texas Southern is averaging only 55.7 points while shooting 38.7% from the field. With these offensive struggles, the Tigers have gone under in six consecutive games.

Against Kansas, which scores over 70 points per game, TSU must be better. The Tigers will look to get in the paint, as they are a poor 3-point shooting team at 27.1% (332nd). Sophomore forward Davon Barnes is the lead scorer at 14.1 points per game, and he comes off a 30-point outing in the 78-63 loss to Samford.

Kansas Lacking Depth?

The Jayhawks had a rough showing in the Battle 4 Atlantis, including a nail-biting 69-68 win over Wisconsin and a loss to Tennessee. Also, Kansas’ first game in the tournament was a tight 80-74 win over NC State. Following an underwhelming performance in the Bahamas, the Jayhawks are 0-4 ATS over the last four.

At this point, Kansas has real worries on offense. The team is shooting only 44.8% from the field  (124th). This is a massive drop-off compared to last season’s title-winning team, which finished 15th in field goal percentage. Texas Southern will be a good opportunity for the Jayhawks to solve some issues, as the Tigers rank 279th in opponent shooting percentage.

Furthermore, Kansas is lacking depth. Outside of the starters, guard Bobby Pettiford Jr. is the sole player averaging over 15 minutes per game. The starting lineup is combining for 62.1 of the team’s 74.4 points. Texas Southern will also give the Jayhawks a chance to give reserves more minutes, but top reserve Pettiford will be out with a hamstring injury.

Texas Southern vs Kansas Picks & Prediction

Kansas will get its first home cover of the season against Texas Southern’s inefficient offense. In three games against Houston, Auburn and Texas Tech, the Tigers are averaging under 60 points. Look for that trend to continue as Kansas ranks 34th in allowed shooting percentage. Also, Texas Southern lacks the length to guard the Jayhawks’ Gradey Dick (15.4 points) and Jalen Wilson (22.9 points).

Go with the under in this one. As mentioned, the Tigers’ offense is one of the worst in college basketball. Plus, Kansas has little depth, especially with Pettiford’s absence. Texas Southern has gone under in six of seven games and Kansas went under in its loss to Tennessee.
