Texas vs Tennessee Game Preview, Odds, Picks & Predictions

Will Texas A&M Take Down Third Straight Ranked Opponent?

When the Southeastern Conference Tournament got underway, the March Madness odds favored a final between Auburn and Kentucky. Tennessee and Texas A&M had other ideas so the Volunteers and Aggies will be meeting in the SEC final.

Texas A&M is in the title game for the first time in 2016 and looking for its first SEC title. It would also remove any suspense surrounding the Aggies being included in the March Madness bracket. Tennessee hasn’t won the SEC tournament since 1979 and lost in the finals in 2018 and 2019.

Tennessee has climbed to eighth in the NCAA NET rankings and is coming off a win over Kentucky in the semifinals. Texas A&M jumped from 51st to 42nd in the NET rankings.

The Volunteers are listed at +4000 in the odds to win the national championship.

Texas A&M Getting Hang of Topping Ranked Opponents

The line between victory and defeat can be razor-thin at this time of the year.

The Texas A&M Aggies needed overtime to survive a test against Florida in their SEC Tournament opener before taking down top-seeded Auburn and rolling past Arkansas to reach the SEC championship game for the first time since 2016.

Texas A&M, which finished in a five-way tie for fifth place in the SEC during the regular season, was on the outside looking in when it came to the March Madness predictions when the regular season ended. Now the Aggies are in the field as a No. 11 seed after posting their second and third wins against ranked teams during the tournament.

The Aggies deserve credit for not letting down and admiring their win over Auburn when it came time to face Arkansas. Texas A&M never trailed in the game, shot better than 50% from the field, and on 3-pointers for its second double-digit win over a ranked opponent in March after rolling past the Alabama Crimson Tide late in the regular season.

Quenton Jackson had 20 points to lead the way against the Razorbacks. He is averaging 17 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2.3 steals in three games in the tournament.

Red-Hot Tennessee Win Away from First SEC Title Since 1979

The first thing that jumps out about this Tennessee team during the regular season is how much better the Volunteers were playing at home than away from Knoxville. Tennessee was one of three SEC teams to go undefeated at home.

Auburn and Kentucky’s perfect home records remain intact but their SEC tournament hopes ended before Sunday’s final.

Tennessee is alive after knocking Kentucky out of the tournament. It was the Volunteers’ seventh win against a ranked opponent, which tied Texas Tech for the second-most in the country. Only Oklahoma has played more games against teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 poll than the 13 faced by Tennessee.

Tennessee, which owns wins over Auburn and Kentucky in the last two weeks, forced the Wildcats to miss 18 of 20 shots from 3-point range.

The Volunteers have won 11 of their last 12 games and could be in play for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament with a win on Sunday.

Freshman Kennedy Chandler had 19 points as he scored in double figures for the eighth game in a row as he was not bothered by the prospect of facing the blue blood Kentucky program with a spot in the SEC final on the line.

“Coach [Rick] Barnes has great trust in me and knows I’m going to deliver the ball to my teammates or find a great shot,” Chandler said after the Kentucky win.

Tennessee has covered against the college basketball spreads in six of its last eight games.

Texas A&M Aggies vs. Tennessee Volunteers Head-to-Head

Tennessee has won six of the last seven matchups against Texas A&M including a 90-80 win on February 1 as an 11-point favorite at home behind 16 points and seven assists from freshman Kennedy Chandler.

Tennessee has covered in four of the last six meetings although the Aggies covered in two of the last three.

Something that could be of interest for those who bet online, three of the last four games between the Aggies and Volunteers went over the total with Tennessee hitting the 90-point mark twice during that span.

The teams have never met in the SEC tournament.

Texas A&M Aggies vs. Tennessee Volunteers Betting Lines

Texas A&M Aggies vs. Tennessee Volunteers Prediction

Texas A&M is second and Tennessee third in the SEC in steals per game so ball security will be a key in this one.

Something will have to give as Texas A&M has won seven straight games and Tennessee six in a row.

The run by the Aggies is a great story but Tennessee is still favored to be cutting down the nets. However, with Texas A&M’s NCAA tournament spot hardly guaranteed, expect the Aggies to play like their season is riding on every possession.

Pick: Tennessee Volunteers -275

Pick: Texas A&M Aggies +6½ (-110)
