Houston Looks to Remain on Top in AAC

Wednesday will bring together the American Athletic Conference’s best and worst team as the No. 2 Houston Cougars will play host to the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes.

Tulsa is on a four-game losing streak and with only one win in conference play, the Hurricanes are last in the AAC.

The Cougars are on a streak on their own, winning four in a row. With a 10-1 conference record, Houston is first in the American Athletic, two games ahead of second-place Tulane and Temple.

The Hurricanes and Cougars have already met in late December in Tulsa. Houston left with a near 40-point victory, defeating Tulsa 89-50.

According to college basketball odds, Houston (+700) has the best odds to win the national title. The Cougars (-1200) also have the best odds to win the AAC while Tulsa (+100,000) has the worst odds to win.

Let’s check the latest college basketball news, stats, injury reports and college basketball lines for Tulsa vs Houston. We’ve got plenty of NCAA basketball picks for you to consider.

Tulsa Eyes Revenge

After Houston beat them on their home floor, the Golden Hurricanes will look to do the same to the Cougars on Wednesday, with the chance to also pick up a top-five win.

However, a victory will be tough for Tulsa as its current four-game losing streak has been highlighted by defensive difficulties and scoring struggles.

The Golden Hurricane are last in the American Athletic Conference in points allowed, with teams averaging 76.9 points against them. Their 68.9 points per game is second-worst in the conference. In its last four games, Tulsa has averaged 66 points while its opponents averaged 80.8 points.

Tulsa had a solid offensive outing in its last loss to Wichita State, scoring 75, but its inability to sink free throws combined with the Shockers’ strong shooting ruined its chance at a win. The Golden Hurricane finished shooting 42.4% from the field, but went 13 of 21 on free throws. Wichita State, meanwhile, shot 51.5% from the field.

The Golden Hurricane had similar shooting difficulties when they faced Houston the first time. Tulsa shot 33.9% from the field and 20% from 3, with just one player scoring in double figures.

Tulsa will need a better offensive outing this time around to keep things competitive.

Houston Stays Consistent

After their one-point loss to Temple, the Cougars have gone on a four-game win streak, with their offense taking the spotlight during that time.

Houston’s defense is normally the backbone of the team, with its 55.6 points per game allowed first in the conference and second in the nation, but its offense has stepped up recently.

The Cougars are fourth in the conference in scoring and second in field goal percentage, averaging 75.4 points on 47.3% shooting. They have scored 75 or more points in three of their last four games, averaging 77 points in that time.

Jarace Walker has continued to break out, averaging 20 points a game in Houston’s last four games and leading the team in scoring in three of those four. Marcus Sasser remains the Cougars’ leading scorer, averaging 16 points. Walker is second, averaging 11.8 points.

Houston’s offense went off in its first game against Tulsa, recording its most points against a conference opponent this season. The Cougars scored 89 points on 59% shooting against the Golden Hurricane, though Sasser nor Walker were the leading contributors. Sasser scored 12 in the win, but it was Tramon Mark and Emanuel Sharp who led, each putting up 14.

The Cougars’ ability to shoot and rely on multiple players to score will continue to push them to success.

Tulsa vs Houston Picks and Prediction

If history is any indication, Houston should cruise to a victory Wednesday, as the Cougars have continued to shine while Tulsa’s struggles persist.

Houston has been strong on both offense and defense, with both units in the top four in the conference. Though they showed some improvement in their last game, the Hurricanes remain one of the worst offenses, and with the Cougars’ defense making it hard for opponents to score, Tulsa shouldn’t get any reprieve in the matchup. Houston should pick up an easy win at home and cover the spread along the way.
