First-Place Aztecs on Verge of Cracking Top 25
This is the only show in town on Wednesday in the Mountain West Conference with the San Diego State Aztecs trying to hold onto first place against a Utah State team that is just one game back.
Utah State is second and San Diego State fourth in the Mountain West Conference in scoring offense so this could be an entertaining matchup.
The Aggies are the top 3-point shooting team in the country, connecting on 42.7% from distance. However, they are last in the Mountain West in 3-point defense.
Guard Rylan Jones, who has missed seven games this season, including the last four, is questionable for Utah State with an upper-body injury. Jones is fourth on the team with 43 assists
San Diego State guard Adam Seiko is questionable due to illness after missing the last game. He is one of five San Diego State players with more than 50 3-pointers.
San Diego State trails only Duke and Indiana among the “others receiving votes” in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Aztecs are also getting votes in the coaches’ poll.
According to the college basketball odds, San Diego State (+6600) is tied for 20th in the odds to win the national title.

Sixth Time is the Charm
When it comes to experience, it is hard to top what Taylor Funk has added to the Utah State team after the Pennsylvania native transferred in from Saint Joseph’s.
After being limited to seven games during the 2019-20 season and getting another additional season due to the COVID-19 eligibility rules, Funk is in his sixth season playing at the Division I level.
Funk, who started 100 games for the Hawks, has been in the starting lineup for all 19 games for Utah State. The 6-foot-9 Funk had 20-point efforts in recent wins over Wyoming and UNLV. He is 20 for 35 from 3-point range over his last six games and is a major reason why the Aggies are in contention for the Mountain West title.
Utah State has covered against the Las Vegas odds in just one of its last five games and has failed to cover in each of its last nine road games versus San Diego State.
Getting Some Help
Matt Bradley carried the offensive load a season ago as he put up nearly 17 points per game. However, too much was being asked of him as there was no other double-digit scorer for the Aztecs. Bradley attempted 167 more field goals than any other player.
Bradley continues to lead San Diego State in scoring.

However, there are other players stepping up so the Aztecs aren’t a one-man team.
Seattle transfer Darrion Trammell is averaging 11.6 points and 3.6 assists. Lamont Butler’s improvement continues as he has gone from putting up 4.3 points per game as a freshman to 7.3 and now 10.1 while shooting a career-best 45% from the field.
The Aztecs were 3-3 when Bradley was held under 10 points a season ago, and this season they are 6-1 when he failed to hit double digits.
In its last 14 games, San Diego State has covered against the college basketball betting lines just four times.
