Virginia Tech Charging Hard for March Madness berth

North Carolina Eyeing First ACC Tournament Title Since 2016

Could this be an NCAA Tournament elimination game?

North Carolina has better March Madness Odds than Virginia Tech as the bracket on the CBS Sports site lists the Tar Heels as a No. 9 seed while Virginia Tech is not currently in the field.

Both teams have been playing their best basketball recently to put themselves into March Madness contention.

Slowing North Carolina’s Armando Bacot will be key for Virginia Tech as the Tar Heels’ double-double machine had 12 points and 15 rebounds in the most recent meeting.

North Carolina is 29th in the NCAA NET rankings and just 2-7 in Quad 1 games while Virginia Tech is 1-6 in Quad 1 contests and 33rd in the NET rankings so neither team can be 100% comfortable about being included in the March Madness bracket heading into Friday’s showdown.

Both North Carolina and Virginia Tech are at +10000 in the odds to win the national championship.

Virginia Tech Continues Push To Possible March Madness Berth

When Virginia Tech suffered yet another one-possession loss to Miami in late January, the third consecutive loss dropped the Hokies’ record to 10-10 and there was little talk about March Madness predictions.

Virginia Tech ended January with an impressive road win against Florida State and kept on winning. A six-game winning streak was snapped with a loss against North Carolina but the Hokies promptly won five of the next six games including two victories in the ACC tournament.

Virginia Tech needed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Darius Maddox just to get by Clemson in the Hokies’ ACC tourney opener. It was a different story against second-seeded Notre Dame as Virginia Tech never trailed in the 87-80 victory.

Five players scored in double figures led by Keve Aluma as Virginia Tech shot 57% from the field and committed just six turnovers to reach the ACC semifinals for the first time in more than a decade.

Seven of Virginia Tech’s last 10 games have gone over the Las Vegas Odds total.

Manek Calm Leading North Carolina Into Semis

North Carolina showed off its offensive potential in rolling past rival Duke in the final regular-season game in the legendary coaching career of Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. Looking for a spot in the ACC semifinals, it was the North Carolina defense that took over.

The Tar Heels held Virginia to 35% shooting and didn’t trail for the final 35 minutes in a dominating 63-43 win over Virginia

Brady Manek led the way with 21 points as he had at least 20 points in his third game in a row. Manek has scored in double figures in 12 games in a row to provide offensive support to Armando Bacot. The Tar Heels are 10-2 in those games and have played their way into the conversation to be included in the March Madness bracket.

Virginia didn’t have a field goal in the final 6:14 of the first half and finished the half 5 of 27 from the field. Manek outscored Virginia 19-13 in the first half which is the first time a North Carolina player had more points at halftime than its opponent since Reggie Bullock accomplished the feat against Maryland in 2013.

North Carolina is 5-1 against the college basketball spreads in its last six games.

Virginia Tech vs North Carolina Head-to-Head

North Carolina has won each of the last four meetings with Virginia Tech and covered in the last six matchups. The Tar Heels swept the two games during the regular season with a 78-68 home win on January 24 as a 5-point favorite and taking the rematch 65-57 on the road on February 19 as 4½-point underdogs.

Four of the last six games in the series went over the total.

Something that could be of interest to those who bet online, this will be the third year in a row that the Hokies and Tar Heels will play in the ACC tournament with North Carolina winning the previous two matchups 78-56 and 81-73 with the Tar Heels covering as favorites both times.

Virginia Tech vs North Carolina Betting Lines

Virginia Tech vs North Carolina Prediction

Virginia Tech and North Carolina rank third and fourth in the ACC in scoring margin but rebounding could be the key as the Tar Heels lead the ACC in rebounding margin.

Virginia Tech is better when it comes to ball security so the Hokies’ ability to force turnovers may need to compensate for North Carolina’s edge inside.

North Carolina continues to be without two of its eight players who average more than 10 minutes per game as Dawson Garcia and Anthony Harris are both out for the season.

Virginia Tech’s late-season surge has been impressive but can the Hokies finally find a way to knock off the Tar Heels, especially with both teams’ NCAA Tournament hopes probably in need of another win?

Pick: North Carolina Tar Heels -140

Pick: North Carolina Tar Heels -2½ (-110)
